About this listen
Some of the most profound secrets about what it means to be human are now being revealed, thanks to the amazing tools of biotechnology. The Human Genome Project, completed in 2003, opened the book on the genetic instructions that go into making a human. Now other species are being studied at the same level of detail, providing astonishing insights into the whole range of life on Earth.
In 24 thought-provoking lectures designed for nonscientists, this course explores today's exciting field of genomics, the study of the vast storehouse of information contained within chromosomes. Your professor is Princeton University biologist Lee M. Silver, an acclaimed teacher, scientist, and author of popular books on biotechnology, genetics, and their impact on society.
Enlivened by Dr. Silver's clear and enthusiastic presentation, this course is an unrivaled opportunity to investigate this dramatic new picture of our past, present, and future as a species. You’ll begin by surveying the history of ideas about life and inheritance, then peer into the human genome to read its code, compare it with the genomes of other species, and trace how information is translated into individual humans with all of our rich diversity. Then you’ll investigate topics like gene sequencing, FISH, the DNA microarray, and the molecular clock. Watching this very timely course, you will feel a sense of awe as you probe deeply and wondrously into the Science of Self.

Sadly out of date
Although only published on Audible this year, the material was originally published in 2009. Sadly some parts are 10 years behind the times. 10 years in science, especially in a burgeoning new field is a very long time. Apart from that it was a cogent, thought provoking and interesting read.

Interesting but limited
So I did enjoy the content and the flow was very well paced, with each change of topic linking so well that it related to and built upon the previous.
However- many times it was clearly directing to “look at” or “observe” a chart or visualisation that was not visible to the audible user- not even in the PDF
I mean not a huge loss, especially as I do have prior knowledge of cell and the likes, though it would have aided the learning experience if they were included in the PDF at least, solidifying the understanding and feeling like I was alongside the lecturer.
As well as this, at times such as when discussing Autism, I don’t know if it is the perspective of the lecturer, or for the purpose of the content/sake of time. Either way- such conditions were discussed simply as defaults, all “sufferers” with missing pieces- well quite simply placed within one small box rather than an entire spectrum of abilities as well as disabilities…
Big fan of Mendel so great how much content he got, not usually one that gets the chat.
But yea if you’re interested in the workings and roles of genetics, cells and how the past continues to influence the present. Give it a listen.

Chaos between ideas
Great ideas of supposed development in historical biology, which are in next lecture contradicted by factual evidence in spies specific developments. If you're not clear of realities, you could believe all this.
