Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

She has only one chance to turn her life around....

Allie is bored with her job and starting to wonder whether she even likes her boyfriend, Ryan.

The high point in her day is passing a café on her walk home from work. It is the sort of place where she'd really like to work.

Then one day she sees as advert on the door: assistant wanted. But before she can land her dream job, Allie knows she must achieve two things:

  1. Learn to cook
  2. End her relationship with Ryan, especially as through the window of the café, she spies a waiter who looks much more like her type of man.

And when she learns that the café is in danger of closing, Allie knows she must do her very best to save the day....

Thank you Katie Fforde!

I think KF is back on form in this short story, after a brief and not entirely successful foray into the past in her most recent novel, I can say that this is back to her brilliant best. Saving the day in this short story, a bitesize treat for me and balm for the mind. I shall be listening again. The characters are likeable and you want the main character Allie to succeed in her endeavours and from the get go I was on her side, always a good sign that you're enjoying the book, Learning to cook with Allie was somehow made to seem exciting too!
My only complaint with this audiobook is that I wanted it to be longer, I know it's meant to be short but feel it could still be twice the length and would still be a short one! I hope you 'll give this a go, if you like a gentle romance and don't mind the length or even you like your books longer it's still worth it.

Not the usual Katie Fforde standard felt it was ‘storytime’

I distinctly got the feeling that this was written for a ‘teen’ reader, it was written in a story book way and at times I felt it was like an Enid Blyton boom with some of the language and descriptions.

The characters were terribly stereotypical and I don’t know any 20 year old who doesn’t know what a Cappuccino is, let alone not tried one if they drink coffee!

I stuck with it, but to be honest it really wasn’t great listen and very disappointing. I love KF books whether on audible or on my bookshelf, so I’m not quite sure what happened here.

Simplistic. Don't waste time on it.

I enjoyed the Christmas short stories by Katie Fforde but this story was so banal it was ludicrous. Almost insulting that no editor suggested any improvements. It was like an old fashioned children's reading book, so simplistic and poorly written that I wondered if it were a parody. The style of the narration matched the content but I suppose with such poor material, it would have been difficult to read with much expression. Avoid.
