Summary

James Comey, former FBI director and Sunday Times number one best-selling author of A Higher Loyalty, uses his long career in federal law enforcement to explore issues of justice and fairness in the US justice system.

James Comey might best be known as the FBI director whom Donald Trump fired in 2017, but he’s had a long, varied career in the law and justice system. He knows better than most just what a force for good the US justice system can be and how far afield it has strayed during the Trump presidency.

In his much-anticipated follow-up to A Higher Loyalty, Comey uses anecdotes and lessons from his career to show how the federal justice system works. From prosecuting mobsters as an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York in the 1980s to grappling with the legalities of anti-terrorism work as the deputy attorney general in the early 2000s to, of course, his tumultuous stint as FBI director beginning in 2013, Comey shows just how essential it is to pursue the primacy of truth for federal law enforcement.

Saving Justice is gracefully written and honestly told, a clarion call for a return to fairness and equity in the law.

Always thoughtfully written

I have enjoyed both Comey's books. While I do try to question his reasoning at times, I do absolutely understand that he is a man of morals and stands by them, and absolutely respect him for this. Having "read" this after January 6th 2021, I'm not sure that Trump should be pardoned, but I do understand his reasoning in general, even agree with his point of view. There is a part of me that feels his last chapter js an application for a job interview. But should he ever get back into a govt. / judicial I'd be delighted. Mr Comey still has lots to give.

A deontological exposition

A deontological exposition. A celebration of everything that is non venal.

If these terms are not foremost on your mind after 4 years living (surviving) in a dystopian post-truth Trumpian hellscape, then it is time you reacquaint yourself with them.

Comey helps you do that, again. (I recommend you start with his first book if you haven’t done that yet).

A man of honor and reason with a clear compass north. A few years ago he found himself at an intersection with an impossible choice and did the best he could. He is not to blame for the madness of Trump.

I enjoyed the anecdotes in this short book and he provides some good guidance for how to further imbed fairness, accountability and balance in the government.

I don’t agree that the Justice Department should give Trump a pass and not pursue him legally once out of office. It’s clear Comey wrestles with that conclusion as well. I think the lack of reckoning with Nixon taught us a lesson not to be forgotten.

Comey still have a lot more to give us so I hope he will find the right perch to contribute from apart from his books and participation in public debates.

A great book from a great man

As a retired investigator and law enforcement manager, I found this book inspiring. The audio book, read by the author confronts the challenges that professionalism and ethics demand.
