Summary

Journey with Olympian Ryan Hall as he reflects on the joys and trials of the running life and, along the way, shows you how his faith has helped him win in his workouts, races, and overall mindset.

Ryan Hall is an Olympic athlete and American record holder in the half marathon (59:43). But as a kid, Ryan hated running. He wanted nothing to do with the sport until one day, he felt compelled to run the 15 miles around his neighborhood lake. He was hooked.

Starting that day, Ryan felt a God-given purpose in running. He knew he could, and would, race with the best runners in the world and that his talent was a gift to serve others. These two truths launched Ryan's 20-year athletic career and guided him through epic failures and exceptional breakthroughs to competing at the highest level.

Now a coach, speaker, and nonprofit partner, Ryan shares the powerful faith behind his athletic achievements and the lessons he learned that helped him push past limits, make space for relationships that enrich life on and off the running trails, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Lessons such as:

  • Learning how to focus on your purpose and say no to distractions
  • Select and strive for the right goals - goals for the heart and the body
  • How to deal with defeat and disappointment
  • How to endure immense pain and build resilience
  • Running as if you've already won

Ryan's story is one of encouragement and inspiration for listeners of any age and level of running ability - or none at all. It's a story that shows that you, too, can change your outlook, see God's hand in your life, and run the race that really matters.

Too many religious references.

Ryan hall is a phenomenal athlete. I looked forward to listening to this book but was disappointed with the repeated religious referencing from the beginning. This wasn’t in any way represented in the title. I couldn’t deal with repeated religious references any more so I stopped listening early on. This is a religious book disguised as a running book.

Thought this book was about running!

Tried this book twice but gave up. I heard about Ryan via other books with Deena Castor and Meb but realise the focus of his story is more about his beliefs rather than his career. that's fine but I was hoping to get an insight into his running career rather than listen to tangents.

More like Bible study than running

I've nothing against people who have faith and knew Ryan was a committed Christian from previous interviews, but this book quickly went from tiresome to ridiculous. He supports a lot of statements / decisions with a bible quote, and I mean a lot. Fine, I was just about coping with that but then the section where he decided that God was going to be his running coach was ridiculous. Apparently, God quickly told him to seek the advise of actual coaches, rather than the Almighty lacing up his Nikes and running tempo with Ryan.Maybe God was at work here, delivering the message 'are you stupid, get an actual coach'. God also told him that rest was important, obviously there was a bible quote to support this too. Strangely every single coaching manual you can find tells you the same thing, maybe the good Lord has been busy writing manuals. I find it interesting how people get strength from their faith, but unfortunately to me, Ryan came across as a bit of a religious nut job. I'll be returning this for a refund.

For every Christian runner

This just happened to be just what I needed for this season where I’m injured.
A really wonderful reminder of finding God in every run and through life.
