To his customers and neighbours on 125th street, Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a life for himself and his family. He and his wife, Elizabeth, are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger and bigger all the time.

The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Summary
Boston PI Spenser takes on a new case in this installment in Robert B. Parker's iconic New York Times best-selling series.
Carolina Garcia-Ramirez is a rising star in national politics, taking on the establishment with her progressive agenda. Tough, outspoken, and driven, the young congresswoman has ignited a new conversation in Boston about race, poverty, health care, and the environment. Now facing her second campaign, she finds herself not only fighting a tight primary with an old guard challenger but also contending with numerous death threats coming from hundreds of suspects.
When her chief of staff reaches out to Spenser for security and help finding the culprits of what he believes to be the most credible threats, Garcia-Ramirez is less than thrilled. Since her first grassroots run, she’s used to the antipathy and intimidation women of color often face when seeking power. To her, it’s all noise. But it turns out an FBI agent disagrees, warning Spenser that Garcia-Ramirez might be in real danger this time.
It doesn’t take long for Spenser to cross paths with an extremist group called The Minutemen, led by a wealthy Harvard grad named Bishop Graves. Although Graves is a social media sensation, pushing an agenda of white supremacy and toxic masculinity, he denies he’s behind the attacks. As the primary nears and threats become a deadly plot, it’s up to Spenser, Hawk, and a surprise trusted ally to ensure the congresswoman is safe. This is Spenser doing what he does best, living by a personal code and moral compass that can’t ever be broken.

Another Book Series Goes Woke
I have read all of the Spencer novels. Now, in the 48th in the series; Spencer expresses support for an A.O.C. like character and depicts her adversaries as right wing Neanderthals. Why would Ace Atkins distort the legacy of Robert Parker? Sadly; this is the last Spencer novel I will purchase.

End of the Line
Started with the Spenser series as a kid. Read them all, then listened to the Audiobooks even through the "ghost of Robert B. Parker" phase, which has been entertaining and familiar, if uneven. But now, we've gotten to the point where Spenser is so "with the times" he unironically uses the term "Latinx". I'm out. End of the line for me after 40 years of the character. This book is so predictable, stereotypical, and wooden it hurts.

Spencer gone Woke???
Spencer going Woke? Thinly veiled AOC character, singing her praises? Going to have to cancel future novels. This series was my favorite.... What next, Hawk in sensitivity training, Spencer swearing off boxing as to violent? Returned the audio book... so sad 😞

Does every author eventually have to get political?
Et tu Spencer? I don’t need to pay for a polarizing book that spews a political narrative. According to the latest Spencer novel, there is an overwhelming racist, sexist population set against a wonderful leftist politician just because of her race and gender. Last Spencer novel for me. Don’t care about the plot or mystery as I can’t get beyond the constant portraying of those against her policies are all just racist. Ugh.

Frightenly topical
It would be an understatement to say that as an elder black man I find the current political/social climate in America frightening. It feels like the country is sliding slowly back to the era where black people had no rights. I hadn't really expected this highly anticipated Spenser entry to address the current climate head on. "Bye Bye Baby" is decidedly the most indelibly disturbing entries in the series. This is not to say I didn't enjoy it. I did. But I found it uncomfortable listening as Spenser navigates the racist attitudes prevalent today. Even more disconcerting not having a Spenser around to help shift attitudes in a more positive direction.

Too woke to be entertaining
Spenser has always been liberal but. He also saw through the ideology. This story is not up to the old standards. It’s just silly.
