Complex but intriguing plot

Although this is the 13th book in the series featuring investigative reporter Jack Morrow it is my first experience of him, and I quite enjoyed it, although I did find some of the references to things that had obviously happened in previous books quite confusing.

There are two main strings to the story, first is Jack's 12 year old daughter and her friend who are obsessed with making TikTok videos dressed in skimpy clothes, but this develops into something more when it emerges that the friend's mother has a boyfriend who is part of an anti-government militia group and likes to shoot things with his pals.

The second, and main, part of the story involves a man who wears a zombie mask when he robs stores at gun point, Jack is investigating this story which changes direction dramatically when Jack discovers the body of a collector of religious artefacts. He gets friendly with a cop, but this leads to another sub-plot about another cop who is moonlighting as a cash delivery driver for a drug gang.

I think that the way that Jack's confusion about the way that modern life is going will resonate with a lot of people and I also liked the way that the different story lines are woven together. The narration was a bit of a mixed bag for me, I found some of the narrators to be quite difficult to understand, especially when they are communicating by telephone, but the main narrator was good.
