Summary

Rob Delaney is a father, a husband, a comedian, a writer. He is the author of an endless stream of beautiful, insane jokes on Twitter. He is sober. He is sometimes brave. He speaks French. He has bungee-jumped off the Manhattan Bridge. He enjoys antagonizing political figures, powerful retailers and the Kardashians. He listens to metal while he works out. He broke into an abandoned mental hospital with his mother. He played Sir Lancelot in Camelot. He has battled depression. He is funny as s***. He cleans up well. He and Margaret Atwood have a thing going on Twitter. He is lucky to be alive.

Critic reviews

"Rob Delaney has done it again! Actually, this is his first book, so he has not 'done it again.' Actually, this book is so good, I doubt he will be able to do it again. He's peaked" (Judd Apatow)
"Warning: This book may cause involuntary seepage. Some funny, funny, funny, funny s*** from the most dangerous man on Twitter. The fact that he's just as funny in long form makes me want to vomit with envy" (Anthony Bourdain)
"All it takes to be as funny as Rob Delaney is luck, good timing, deep compassion, reckless imaginative agility, a flawless grasp of the inner workings of language, and criminally vast quantities of mojo. What a jerk" (Teju Cole, author of Open City)

Funny with a capital F

What a fantastic book. I've loved listening and was sad when it ended. Don't listen if you don't like swearing though.

Some gems

Would you try another book written by Rob Delaney or narrated by Rob Delaney?

Yes, possibly I would lean more to his writing than narrating - surprisingly flat for a performer.

Would you ever listen to anything by Rob Delaney again?

Yes.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Rob Delaney?

Yes, but I think there is a lot of room for him to improve his narration skills.

Could you see Rob Delaney being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

See: Catastrophe. It's a series by and starring Rob Delaney.

Laughed out loud

Rob Delaney is truly a lovely man whose enthusiasm to expose all his flaws, misdemeanours & mishaps alongside his many loves & embarrassments endear him to me more.

I share his love of old buildings & distain of misogyny I share. I laughed out loud many times right to the end. Even the thanks at the end are hilarious (apart from the *Bill Cosby bit which I assume meant he wrote it long before the sex predator was exposed). I found comfort in his mistakes, kindness in his descriptions of fellow humans he has met along the way & relief that my gallows humour is shared, just like the bloated corpse of regret we all have if we are only brave enough to admit it.

Fascinating and funny.

Brilliantly read and full of interesting and terrifying stories that me think about my own life. Listened to during a global pandemic only heightened the experience. Thanks Rob, will be bingeing on Catastrophe this weekend.

Laugh out loud hilarious!

I love this book! I love Rob Delahney! Had a crush on him for years, even married a guy called Rob.. But it's not the same. Buy this book it truly is insightful (I feel like we have all experienced degrees of depression but full blown awfulness he describes extremely well) but also I laughed out loud throughout. Butthole stories are simply the best. I had a sadness in the back of my mind knowing that he had the horrific loss of his Son to come in his life. The amount of tragic death this man has known makes me wonder how the hell he remains sane. But he even turned that into honest talks in which he throws together love, comedy, life and death with ease. Overall, he is just a damn good guy. Despite calling himself otherwise at times which made me want to find him and flick him on the forehead, hard. Beautiful man, beautiful book.

Listened free on Audible

I haven’t tried Audible before so maybe I would have enjoyed this more had I “read” it myself.
I kept waiting the whole time for the “laughs” but didn’t get them, as other reviews had advised, but maybe it’s not meant to be funny?!I love Catastrophe, it’s really well written & acted, so maybe RD has perfected his craft of writing more since this book was written.
He just seems to be trying too hard all the time to be “funny”.
In summary, I don’t really get this book at all but it was ok for a free trial on Audible.
