About this listen

Number one New York Times best-selling author Stephen King's beloved novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption - the basis for the Best Picture Academy Award-nominee The Shawshank Redemption - about an unjustly imprisoned convict who seeks a strangely satisfying revenge.

A mesmerising tale of unjust imprisonment and offbeat escape, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is one of Stephen King's most beloved and iconic stories and it helped make Castle Rock a place listeners would return to over and over again. Suspenseful, mysterious and heart-wrenching, this iconic King novella, populated by a cast of unforgettable characters, is about a fiercely compelling convict named Andy Dufresne who is seeking his ultimate revenge.

Originally published in 1982 in the collection Different Seasons (alongside 'The Body', 'Apt Pupil' and 'The Breathing Method), it was made into the film The Shawshank Redemption in 1994. Starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, this modern classic was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, is one of the most beloved films of all time and is IMDb's top-rated movie of all time.

Critic reviews

"When two giants team-up, power follows. King needs no introduction, and Library Journal calls Muller the first superstar of audio. In this program Muller tells King's earthy story of perseverance in Shawshank Prison in raw, gutteral tones. Harsh though the story is, the delivery carries the intimacy of a friend talking to the listener from the passenger seat....Muller's flawless reading enriches King's powerful story, providing a superlative audio program." superbly written and narrated... though I would have loved for Morgan Freeman to have read it!

This is not only an amazing listen/read but a really good film too. The book just has more detail in which I like.

Great book. I think King is better when it's a story about normal things with great twists and turns rather than sci fi and wierd happenings. This is a great book and very well read.

The film is good but the book's better

it pains me to say the movie is better especially being a fan of Stephen king. the movie holds more content and a just desserts for the wicked warden which this book doesn't deliver. I do recommend a listen, and I am in a way glad it did not live up to the greatness of the film version as it is my favourite movie and so is still held in the same regard.

movies better.
