Summary

To keep her parents from losing their farm in Pennsylvania, Emma agrees to travel to England and accept her grandfather’s offer to arrange a marriage for her with the Earl of Devonport. She secretly hopes marriage to this stranger will lead to love.

To honor his father, Devon agrees to marry Emma. A marriage of convenience is acceptable to the earl who wants no emotional ties. He needs an heir and not a demanding wife who would impinge on his freedom. She would be well provided for and have no cause for complaint.

Emma’s straightforward and unpretentious manner draws Devon’s reluctant admiration. Unfortunately, long-held fears are not easily overcome. When the unexpected happens, all hope seems lost. Emma must learn to trust God while surrendering her dreams and expectations into his care.

This is the first book in the Arranged Marriage Series. It is a Christian historical romance.

Beautiful Christian Regency Romance

Reluctant to Wed is a beautiful Christian Historical/Regency Romance. It's not often I've found many books to enjoy in this particular genre or trope, but I loved how the author pulled it off. I definitely enjoyed listening about this marriage of convenience, and how seamlessly the faith element was woven throughout the story. Truly, Emma's faith is remarkable through all the trials she has to face, starting with her coming to a new country to meet her estranged grandfather, all the way to her upcoming marriage, and the problems that surge from gossip and ill-intentioned friends. I loved being encouraged in this regard, as well as reminded that we can truly depend on God for everything and for Him to help and carry us through any trial. The romance is really sweet, and I loved getting to see both Emma and Devon developing feelings for each other. However, there's certainly plenty of conflict towards the second half to keep this couple from each other, and while I understand its purpose in the story, it certainly seemed to drag on. Still, there's a perfect HEA that ties everything up beautifully and the epilogue gives a hint as to the next story.

The narrator was good with not only bringing the characters to life (I certainly enjoyed Emma's soothing voice) but also with performing laughs and chuckles (especially so with Devon). She definitely pulled off all the characters, be them old, like Emma's grandfather, or as young as children. The intonation of derisive comments or Lady Bagot's cold tone definitely weren't pleasant, which means she did a great job pulling the reader into the story and making it more real.

Overall, a Clean/Sweet Regency Romance that I recommended for fans of the author, the marriage of convenience trope, or readers who are looking for the faith element to be more prominent in the stories they read set in this time period. ~ 4.5 stars
