A nice surprise

I bought this in a sale and I really enjoyed it. It is a well read and well written mystery with a credible plat and characters sufficiently well drawn to interest and engage the reader. It was well read and a very pleasant listen with a plausible conclusion. This style is a more gentle than the books I usually buy but I will look out for more in this series.

A good Victorian murder yarn

Well developed characters, reflecting the morals and culture of Victorian times. There's a nod to the railways, but they're not really a theme in the book. Entertaining, a good listen and I'll listen to more

Another brilliant Railway Detective novel.

You can always rely on an interesting and fascinating story in this series, coupled with brilliant naration.

What a surprise!

Good narration, - intriguing story line with an unexpected twist. Enjoyable and thought posing, in the 1800s too... Shocking!

A gentle historical murder mystery.

I did enjoy the book which has twists in the tale. I would read another by the same author and characters although not definitely 'must read another' .

Narration

The story line is great. I always enjoy this authors books but the narration is a little irritating at times.

Good listen

A bit long-winded

Lacked any exciting scenes or interesting characters. I found it boring, I struggled through to the end, but I didn't care who the killer was. The writing was dull, the plot moved along so slowly, nothing much happened. The characters were one-dimensional. The Sergeant was always moaning about missing his wife and home that I wondered why he was still a policeman, and why he hadn't resigned and found a clerical job in London. I love railways and history and crime novels, but not this writer, I shall stick to the likes of Agatha Christie and Patrick O'Brian both of whom really know how to bring characters and plot alive.

A so-so story with a not-so-good reading.

The story itself is decent, rather than good, with an ending that I didn’t quite see coming. I think that if I’d read it myself it might have seemed better. The narrator is not best equipped to deal with the North Yorkshire accent, nor the range of different characters. Many of them ‘spoke’ in very similar ways, the most common of which were submissive or blustery. This detracted from the enjoyment of listening. I’m not likely to listen to another of Marston’s novels for this reason and the writing that underlies such characterisations. I did once read a novel about a ‘railway detective’ but it wasn’t this one. The railway in this story is more peripheral than central, so if that’s your interest, I’d skip this. Oh well, not all stories or narrations can be very good, and perhaps my choices are better than I have felt at times.
