Summary

Audie Award, Personal Development, 2011

Modeled after Maria Shriver's Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah's goal with Put on Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem.

A US Dept. of Justice survey found that females ages 16-24 are more vulnerable to partner violence than any other group, almost triple the national average. Cases like Chris Brown's assault on pop star Rihanna showed an ugly side of adolescent life. However, Queen Latifah has always been a shining example of a woman happy with herself and unwilling to compromise to fit into the "Hollywood ideal" of what a confident beautiful woman should look like. The result: She's one of the biggest A-list celebrities in Hollywood.

Young Ladies Need Motivation Too

Her voice is familiar and loved by many young people. She gives handy bits of advice that teens and young women can certainly understand and use.
Simple advice about true beauty, money and overcoming adversity are shared without brow beating.

I think it is a good mother-daughter or mentor-mentee share. I listened to the whole book to see if it would be appropriate for my tween daughter. I certainly think it is. I am also recommending it to my friends.

Dana is an inspiration. I want to hear more.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. Dana is honest and vulnerable in the telling of her story. She is a regular girl who rose above the obstacles life can throw at us. Her relationship with her mother is deep and together they are paying their blessings forward. This is a must read for all especially teenagers.

What did you like best about this story?

What I loved the most was her human

What does Queen Latifah bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her beautiful voice. It was as if she was sitting in my living room and she was talking to just me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, this is a one sitting book, that I have now listened to three times already. I laughed. I cried. I cheered. I was moved.

Queen Latifah Rocks!!

Would you listen to Put on Your Crown again? Why?

I don't know.. Her voice was beautiful and her story was touching and I am very glad I read it ,but I am not sure I will listen to it again. Although saying that, there are others who will gain a lot from this and who will enjoy listening to this more then once. Dana is very optimistic and a sunny person. It was lovely spending time in her world.

What other book might you compare Put on Your Crown to and why?

Jennifer Hudson's autobiography is quite similar. Both are strong beautiful women who love their families and care very little about all the trappings of fame. They seem like real people that you would enjoy spending time with if you met them in real life.

Have you listened to any of Queen Latifah’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have never listened to other performances by her before. I had watched almost all of her movies and I love her as an actress. I love the way she looks at life. Small things giving great enjoyment. Spending time with real friends and family. Taking care of those who took care of her. Taking a moment to live in the moment ..When Dana( Queen Latifah) talked about the loss of her beloved brother I do admit to crying. She describes the moment so vividly in the hospital with her and her mother as they got the bad news it almost felt like I was there too. Her brother is mentioned so often in the book it feels like he was there with her when she was writing/recording it. Mama Owens was a wonderful women too and it is easy to see where Dana got her strength and sensible look on life. Her performance was excellent and touching and I am so glad I listened to this story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Strength Through Troubled Times.

Any additional comments?

Dana's family are very dear to her and with good reason. They seem like really great people. It was lovely gettting to know those close to her and to see what made her the person she is today. A really nice read that encourages me to look up more about this wonderful woman who is an inspiration to all curvy girls out there.

Typical

This book is great for young girls who live unmotivated, desolate lifestyles and who have little or no ambitions in life. I found it as typical, motivational read and quit boring. It's written more for a high school student rather than a accomplished 33 year old like myself. I now, however, have a more profound understanding of Latifahs upbringing.

Empowering for women

Would you consider the audio edition of Put on Your Crown to be better than the print version?

I really enjoy audio books. I can listen to them in the car or listen to them as I do chores around the house. It's a great form of entertainment.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This question doesn't really apply to an autobiography.

Have you listened to any of Queen Latifah’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not really

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Queen Latifah has more diversity than I gave her credit for. I like her broad perspective on life.

Any additional comments?

I like it that Queen Latifah has a place in the spotlight. There needs to me more room for different types of women in the land of the famous people.

Put On Your Crown

What I liked was it being narrated by Queen Latifah and I won’t say “disliked” but was not previously aware of, was that it has so many, what I would say “subtitles” within a chapter. It read more like a book report than anything else. Now once I got as comfortable as I could with this style, I found the book to be engaging. While I choose the book to have a smooth flow of her life story, and I learned somethings about her, but the book was very much like a motivational book. That’s ok, but I wasn’t looking for motivation. I think it’s a good book for teens and very young adults. I would recommend it to friends with anyone in that age group.
