About this listen

Those who play with fire are going to get burned.... Seven years ago Martin Chadwick set fire to a Manchester pub, not knowing a teenager was sleeping inside. Chadwick's release from prison is imminent, with journalists gearing up for a good old-fashioned media lynching.

With the victim's father telling the papers he is out for revenge, DS Jessica Daniel is left to keep an eye on Chadwick and his fiery 18-year-old son.

If that's not enough to keep her occupied, a private investigator is doing a fine job sticking his oar in, it looks like there's a schoolgirl suicide ring in operation, her car is working a little too well, and the endless rain continues to pound her northern home.

Jessica's personal and professional life are in the balance - giving her barely enough time to focus on the person in her midst seemingly intent on burning everything to the ground.

Another easy Listen

I did enjoy this listen, but I didn't think the writing was as good. There seem to be phrases repeated lots of times. And I did think that the main character was unfortunately coming across as a bit of a caricature.

Unusual storyline

I like the plots, the characterisation, the twists and turns but try as I may, I don't like the main character! Why is she so obnoxious? And why does the author persist in allowing her to have all sorts of unrealistic opportunities to solve every case? It's as if the rest of the Manchester police force is totally incompetent!

Another great story from Kerry Wilkinson

The books from this story are always brilliantly written, with great storylines. The ideas always flow well, and are very well narrated by Becky Hindley.

Another great listen

Hooked on this series now. Enjoyed that this followed on from the last book so seamlessly.

Good, but not as good as some in the series!

What did you like best about Playing with Fire? What did you like least?

The story was okay, but no page turner unlike some in the series. My attention wandered away at times and I may not have stuck with it if I hadn't grown attached to DS Jessica Daniel in the earlier books.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kerry Wilkinson? Why or why not?

Yes, I will keep on with the series. Some are great, some 'pass the time'.

What does Becky Hindley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She is a great narrator. Flawless infact.

Was Playing with Fire worth the listening time?

On balance, yes.
