Summary

Playful Parenting means joining children in their world of play, focusing on connection and confidence, giggling and roughhousing, and following your child's lead. This audiobook is an exciting approach to raising children that will help you nurture close relationships and solve behavior problems.

Think about the loving gaze of an infant, the no-hold-barred embrace of a toddler, the intimacy of a shared bedtime story, or a silent hand-in-hand walk. These moments of heartfelt connection with our children are part of the great payoff for the hard work of parenting. Yet this connection all too often eludes us. We find ourselves locked in battle instead of joined in partnership. Play can be the long-sought bridge back to that deep emotional bond between parent and child.

Critic reviews

“A welcome reminder that the serious business of parenthood also can be fun.” ( Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
“Using examples from his practice, research and personal experience, [Cohen] intelligently guides parents through the possibilities awaiting them if they are willing and able to loosen up. The book explores play with compassion, but is often so funny that parents will find themselves chortling out loud with recognition and anticipation.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Fantastic book with great advice that works when put into practice. Will listen to it again to be sure even more of it sinks in.

Common sense

I listen to this book after having a new friend (of my sons) come into our lives and struggling with his behavioral issues whilst not wanting to end the friendship. While I am still struggling with this relationship, the book has given me loads of suggestions about how to reconnect with my own son after a traumatic past year and "early teen" behaviour from him (in my eyes), or - as the book will tell it - cries for connection from him. I'm going to listen again in case I missed anything but I'd recommend this as a priority read for all parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties and anyone who comes into contact with children.

It is common sense but we can all benefit from a reminder about how it feels to be a young person and tips about how to make them, and us, feel great.

Loved the stories and ideas

I liked very much this book as found it very helpful in understanding children's behaviour and how to connect with them through play.

Just wished the chapters would be named so we could choose easily the parts we would want to review.

Great book on parenting

I’ve read a lot of parenting books and I think that this one is the most useful. Practical advice with theory to back it up. Highly recommend it.

it's all about enjoying the journey

my favourite book on how to make parenting more enjoyable

if you didn't have parents who played with you
if you find it difficult to think of spontaneous games
if you want a way to interpret a child's behaviour and fill their cup with love... this book will get you onto a very good start.

very helpful

I have been implementing the author's suggestions, and I am seeing most power struggles melt away, like ice under the warm sun.
Although I have been actively educating myself, on every aspect of positive and compassionate parenting I can get my hands on, it seems there is always room for improvement.
Fun and games definitely don't come naturally to me... it takes strong intension and practice. And... it's starting to feel amazing!!!
I loved this book, it has really helped me and I recommend it!

This book has saved many of our days

It really has saved the connection with our 3year old on difficult day care mornings or when getting dressed. if I had not first read and now listened to this book in many occasions I would have been just angry and would not have been able to see ways how to improve the situation by adding playfulness.
A must read for every parent! Highly recommend it to anyone who meets children!

insightful and helpful, easy to listen to

This book is full of sensible, logical suggestions and outlooks. The themes are deceptively simple, and are quite difficult to follow in reality. it provides an interesting challenge for parents to think inventively on the spot, listen to what is *not* being said and engage at a level grown ups can find hard. I actually think this is an important read for anyone, not just parents.
However, it sometimes it seems to lack explanation as to how a given scenario specifically helped. its not always obvious (to me) in many of the anecdotes provided whether the giggles induced through this playful way of parenting led to any healing or 'moving-forward' for the child.
