Summary

'After 46 years of being on the road, now is the right time to look back in a way I've never done before: now and then. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.'

Mick Fleetwood has been part of one of the world's most successful and adored bands for over four decades. Here he tells the full and candid story of that life, and what it is to be part of the ever evolving Fleetwood Mac.

His all-access autobiography spans the career of one of classic rock's greatest drummers and band leaders, the co-founder of the deeply loved super group that bears his name.

In this intimate portrait of a life lived in music, Fleetwood vividly recalls his upbringing in Cornwall, Egypt, and Norway, tapping along to whatever song was playing on the radio; his experiences as a musician in Sixties London; the early days of the band featuring Peter Green, and his close friendship with George Harrison and seemingly all of music royalty.

Play On sheds new light on Fleetwood Mac's raucous history, describing the highs and lows of being part of a band that he often single-handedly kept together. His love affair with Stevie Nicks, the creation of landmark albums like Rumours and Tusk, and the many incredible and outrageous moments of recording, touring, fighting, and loving with Fleetwood Mac: all are here. He describes his life's moments with the honesty and immediacy that his fans expect, taking us to the very heart of this multi-layered life.

It's been a tumultuous journey with the excesses of the band's huge success at times threatening to destroy what they strived so hard to create. But through it all, it's been the drive to play on that has won out. Now, then, and always, it's Fleetwood Mac.

Fascinating Life And Times Of Mick Fleetwood

I'm a huge Fleetwood Mac fan mainly the work they did once Lindsey and Stevie joined. I knew pieces of the Peter Green era and the bits before and after and found Micks account of his life and interactions with his band mates honest. He went over the 80's chapter a little quick but perhaps he was too high to remember most of it. It kept me entertained and it sustained my interest throughout and thats all I could really ask for.

Chilled and content, as you’d expect Mick Fleetwood to be

A very enjoyable story, well told in Mick’s own voice. His enthusiasm for music and people in his life (and his remarkably well recalled conversations) can seem exaggerated, but if only we could all have such enthusiasm.
Hopefully he’ll update the book though - after a decade, Mick must have a lot more tales to tell.

A great story well told

The intro meandered a bit which didn't get my hopes up. But once it got going it was great. The narrator is first class and while I like to hear the writer themselves I didn't miss it. Micks insights were fascinating and as a musician I found the more technical stuff great. I play the drums as a hobby instrument and I have been listening to the album "Mystery to me" and Micks approach to drumming explained a lot to me. I liked his candour about his lifestyle and the regrets on his marriage. Oddly, I'd have liked more about his parents and siblings they seemed like great people. But as a whole effort I cannot fault it. Mick is a decent guy, self aware and he treats the others in the story with great respect, even the ones who hurt him. He's likewise contrite about the people he's hurt. I thought it was balanced and he came across as a decent human being. I'd love to meet him and have a pint.

A rollercoaster of a career, but lacks technical detail

I got this book because I knew very little about the group pre-super stardom. I’m ashamed to say I grew up with Rumours and much later Tango In The Night. I don’t know why I wasn’t compelled to look into the band’s rich history sooner, but I started that by coming here and listening to this book. Who better to guide you through the story of Fleetwood Mac than Mick himself. The story is a rollercoaster - with some astonishing unexpected twists involving the founding members. Everytime something is going right, something is always about to go wrong. And that’s all before Stevie and Lindsey even show up!!!!

I wasn’t expecting too much from this - I got a lot more than I paid for - but it left me hungry for technical details about the making of songs and albums. I wanted to feel like I was in the studio with them, and that rarely happened here.

Performance is good - the guy sounds like Mick and you quickly forgets it’s not really him speaking. Not sure it was necessary to do American accents when quoting Lindsey, Stevie and others.

A must read for long time Fleetwood Mac fans

This book provides a broad account of Mick Fleetwood’s life, from a teenager, through the successes and challenges of a long musical career and up to the recent past. The backbone of the narrative is centred on the bands, the people that made them up and their successes, but there is much about Mick’s personal life and the way that he has lived it. I had thought of using the heading ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll’, because it is clear that this would describe a lifestyle that pervaded his environment and those around him, but there was more to his life than this and what came through was a likable, sociable, nice, but sometimes naïve man who has the same allocation of flaws in his character as most of us,.

The book is well read, which it needed to be as it is not a great work of prose, but it is a great insight into the life of a rock star in his own voice. Also, I thought it a bit slow to begin with and there were sections that I would have edited out, as they seemed a little self-indulgent. However, I enjoyed this autobiography and there seemed to be even handed account of situations that clearly had many facets. This is definitely a book for Fleetwood Mac fans and for anyone interested in the lifestyle of a successful and durable rock star.

Excellent book

An epic story by a legendary drummer about a legendary band. Hats off that Mr Fleetwood took the effort to read his own book, many stars can't be bothered.

Thank you for this, Mick!

Thoroughly enjoyed this lovely insight into one of the greatest musical collaborations ever, by one of the greatest drummers, of all time. I have wonderful memories of my mum playing vinyls at full blast, whilst cleaning the house and us both singing at the tops of our voices, to all the songs.
This book touches on the good the bad and some of the ugly parts of Mick and the rest of the members lives. Some parts are difficult to learn, but it's all part and parcel of the essence of the amazing work and gift, Fleetwood Mac produced. Thank you for sharing your story, Mick.
