Story
When Elizabeth Middleton leaves England to join her father at the edge of the New York wilderness, she does so with a strong will and an unwavering purpose: to teach school to children of all races - black, white, and Native American. It is December of 1792 when she arrives in a cold climate unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a man different from any she has ever encountered - a white man dressed like a native. His name is Nathaniel Bonner, also known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Elizabeth defies her father and shatters convention, but her ultimate destiny, here in the heart of the wilderness, lies in the odyssey to come: trials of faith and flesh, and passion born amid Nathaniel's own secrets and divided soul.

In this first book of a three-book series, author Vannetta Chapman brings a fresh twist to the popular Amish fiction genre. She blends the familiar components consumers love in Amish books - faith, community, simplicity, family - with an innovative who-done-it plot that keeps readers guessing right up to the last stitch in the quilt. When two women - one Amish, one English - each with different motives, join forces to organize a successful on-line quilt auction, neither expects nor wants a friendship.

This is not a novel; it's a bad rip-off.
This is part of a series, but it's not a series of novels in the sense of an ongoing set of characters involved in a series of stories (like the Virgin River series or the Walt Longmire series or Outlander series.)
This is a series only in the sense of taking a story and breaking it into several parts and selling them separately to see just how gullible you and I can be. This is a novel in no sense of the word at all. This is a rip-off.
This book contains a plot so thin as to be nearly transparent. Cuban hip-hop star "Viper" is riding in a limo that hits an Amish woman crossing a street in Manhattan. Amish woman breaks leg, goes to hospital and gets taken care of by Viper because she has big brown eyes and he feels guilty.
So, of course, he escorts her back to her parents' home in Lancaster Co., PA and - wait for it - decides to stay for a week. Uh huh.
So, this setup took the first third of the book and there was enough soul-searching, internal dialoguing, self-assessing, mind-numbing detail in the subsequent chapters as to induce a coma.
But he eventually gets found by the media and he has to leave the farm and return to LA. But the paparazzi have found Amanda and are camping out on the farm, harassing the locals and making everyone miserable... for a month... while Viper tries to deflect attention by nuzzling the neck of someone named Maria. But the harassment at Amanda's farm increases because... well, she's all Amish and stuff... and eventually Alejandro "Viper" hears about it.
Meanwhile, Amanda is told by the Bishop that she has to leave and if she doesn't, her parents will be "shunned" by the community.
So Alejandro hears about this and goes to the farm to take Amanda away (rescue her.) She gets in the car to go with him.
The End.
Yep. You heard right. It just ends.
And the massive amounts of filler and fluff and flutter that are used to puff this "story" into a book-length "novel" are so incredibly boring that I kept thinking, "This just has to start moving soon!" And when it did... it ended.
I despise this kind of ripoff. It's dishonest and annoying. I'm returning it to Audible and I will not read any more of this. It's not a "series." It's the first part of a novel and it's a bait and switch.
The narration, by the way, was amateurish and annoying. Ms. McFadden showed high emotion by shouting and deep emotion by whispering which will challenge your ability to control the volume on your listening device. Her accents are awful and inconsistent.
This is Plain Bad.
You've been warned.

Amish meets "The English"
Where does Plain Fame rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
#1
What was one of the most memorable moments of Plain Fame?
When Amanda went into the guest house to find her Cuban friend dancing to his ear buds; then the attention he gave to her while her Mam was not home, Amanda worrying that she should get back to the main house before her Mothers return.
Which character – as performed by Amy McFadden – was your favorite?
Why, that is very difficult as she read each of their parts most excellently.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved the part when they kissed in the buggy. Amanda's hair fell loose from her prayer cap and she didn't worry about replacing it.
Any additional comments?
My mind tends to wander and I lose focus with listening to an audiobook. Some have actually put me to sleep. This one was so very interesting that I lay on the sofa absolutely mesmerized throughout. My attention never left the reading. I can barely wait to listen to book two.

Not Just Another Amish Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Have already recommended this one to many people. It's quite different from the other books I have listened to in this genre. It not only captures the Amish culture but the fast paced life of a Latin superstar.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Plain Fame?
Alejandro at the farm and gaining acceptance from Elias, Amanda's father.
What does Amy McFadden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Really, really great accents. I'm amazed at how well she does with the Cuban accent of Viper and changes to the Amish accent and then nails the snooty voice and accent of some of the people who look down on Amanda.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me want more. I was not going to buy the next book because I really do not like romance novels but this one intrigued me and I bought the second book. I just finished it and have bought the 3rd book!
Any additional comments?
This one is really worth the read. I did't spend a credit because it didn't cost that much so I bought it and the next and the next. I keep thinking that I will get bored with this series but I have to find out what is next so I keep purchasing the next one book.

I adored every moment of this story spend much of the time listening to it trying not to cry even started my roommates when I started laughing out loud at certain lines in the story but as I listened to the story before I plan to listen to it many times more and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the writer and the editors for the story and all the work that's been put into it by all the people that I will never never know how many to do with the story this story is absolutely fantastic on life is stressful and overwhelming nothing beats a good romance novel
