Mit der "Phädra" Racines hat die Tragödie des französischen Barockklassiszismus unbestritten ihren Höhepunkt erreicht. Farbiger und subtiler als die Dramen Corneilles, die ganz vom Ehrbegriff und vom Staatsgefühl des Grand Siècle getragen sind, wird die Tragödie bei Racine zum Tableau menschlicher Leidenschaft, in dem selbst das Pathologische nicht ausgespart ist. Die Liebe als alles beherrschende Macht ist Racines ureigenstes Thema, und es deutet auf jansenistische Vorstellungen hin, wenn er Wille und Vernunft als regulierende Kräfte weitgehend in Frage stellt. Dennoch tritt die Neigung zum Exzessiven in seinem Werk nur gebändigt in Erscheinung, in einer ebenso schlichten wie formvollendeten Sprache, die dem Verlangen des Zeitalters nach Harmonie und der distinguierten Empfindungswelt des französischen Hofes entsprach. Racines reifstes Werk, "Phädra", hat allerdings erst nach dem Tode des Dichters die ihm gebührende Anerkennung gefunden.
