Summary

'I don't much like working for clients. It means that I have to follow someone else's instructions, and I've never been too good at that. When those instructions came from a spirit guide at a seance, I just had to laugh. Well, you would, wouldn't you? The rather attractive young woman whose husband the spook had said I should help her to find took me on a quest that turned into a trail of lucrative antiques deals, spoiled only when the police came plodding in, and I found myself up to my neck in forgeries and murders. Situation normal, really. Then the killer turned his attentions to me, just as the spirit had said he would, and I certainly wasn't laughing any more.'

Excellent read

Excellent read. recommended.
"Antiques are everything ".
Brings back a great era, before the return of the blight or boring modernism.

Back to home turf.

After Lovejoy's extensive travelling in the previous couple of instalments, this one is cosily back within his native stomping ground of East Anglia: which i found refreshing. It's a solid mystery with all the usual Lovejoy twists and turns, with plenty of antiques trivia, cynicism, and devious ladies.

Good narration as always from MFS.

Dated and disappointing

I bought this because I liked the TV show. Most of the characters are different, the familiar ones are distinctly unlikable. In fact, it's hard to recall a single likable character. It's uniformly sexist, which got really tiresome by the end. The homosexual stereotyping is very dated and pretty offensive to be honest. The story was ok but difficult to follow in places because of an indistinct narrative and colloquialisms. Disappointing.
