About this listen

It isn't often you receive a letter from the dead.

When Vianne Rocher receives a letter from beyond the grave, she has no choice but to follow the wind that blows her back to Lansquenet, the village in south-west France where, eight years ago, she opened up a chocolate shop.

But Vianne is completely unprepared for what she finds there. Women veiled in black, the scent of spices and peppermint tea, and there, on the bank of the river Tannes, facing the square little tower of the church of Saint-Jerôme like a piece on a chessboard - slender, bone-white and crowned with a silver crescent moon - a minaret.

Nor is it only the incomers from North Africa that have brought big changes to the community. Father Reynaud, Vianne's erstwhile adversary, is now disgraced and under threat. Could it be that Vianne is the only one who can save him?

Wonderful Story

This is a wonderfully entertaining story, set somewhere in deepest France and built around the fascinating Vianne Rocher of Chocolat fame. Read by Rula Lenska and Gareth Armstrong, the many characters are really brought to life and made listening an absolute pleasure, I was sorry when the book came to an end. I felt that I would benefit from being able to sit with Vianne and pour out all my troubles over a steaming cup of her marvellous-sounding hot chocolate! A real treat, thankyou.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Everything you want from Joanne Harris and more. Back at lansquenet she develops the characters.

What did you like best about this story?

She is a master story teller. I am a lover of the spiritual nature and witchy beauty of her stories. Don't believe other review that says not as good ass lollipop shoes. Both fantastic.

What about Rula Lenska and Gareth Armstrong ’s performance did you like?

Both great. Took a bit of getting used to Rula after juliette stevensons reading of 'lollipop shoes'. Rula does kids and elderly brilliantly. Gareth Armstrong couldn't have been a better choice for playing the priest.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both!

Sooooooo beautiful

a glorious study of people, cleverly woven against a background of the changes in modern village life, all with Vianne"s own inimitable personality , wrapped up like a beautiful bonbon.

balance of twists and pace

Beautiful descriptions, interesting characters and engaging and gripping storyline. I loved Chocolat and I much prefer this book to the second book in this series.

Classic Joanne Harris goodness

I have thoroughly enjoyed all three books . As usual the story draws you in. The characters are colourful and intriguing and the plot pulls you in as it races along . The only downside for me, which I could not shake off, was the voice of Rula Lenska . She is a wonderful actress but her voice was simply too old for the youthful and vibrant Vianne. She did however play the other characters beautifully but her voice simply did not sit well with me for a Vianne. Gareth Armstrong however was perfect .

Lovely return to Chocolat and the characters

This novel is a really good listen - the descriptions are colourful and evocative, and the mystery at the heart of the novel remains tantalising to the last. Initially Rula Lenska's narration seemed at odds with the youth of Vianne, but the range of her voice in creating the different characters compensated. Her co-narrator as M Le Cure was perfect. Very enjoyable and a great antidote to chilly British weather.

Well worth the listen

I have to confess that it took me a while to adjust to the different narrators after Juliet Stephenson’s reading of The Lollipop Shoes. One of the hazards of going back to back, I suppose! However, once I got over that . . . ! An enjoyable story and educational too! Enjoy.

Another great Chocolat story

Althoug you need to have read Le Chocolate first. I love all of the characters in this book especially as the chapters are read by the two narrators - extremely well done!
