Summary
The story of the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, when for six extraordinary months the city was at the centre of world government as the peacemakers wound up bankrupt empires and created new countries.
Between January and July 1919, after the war to end all wars, world leaders converged on Paris for the Peace Conference. At its heart were three great powers - Woodrow Wilson, Lloyd George and Clemenceau.
The peacemakers, so it has been said, failed dismally - failed above all to prevent another war. Margaret MacMillan argues that they have unfairly been made scapegoats for the mistakes of those who came later. Their goals - to make defeated countries pay without destroying them, to satisfy impossible nationalist dreams, to prevent the spread of Bolshevism and to establish a world order based on democracy and reason - could not be achieved by diplomacy.

Excellent history.
The writers understanding of history enables her to see the big picture and explain the positive and negative sides of the treaty. Well read by the narrator.

This bk makes history swing; strongly recommended
Tremendous value: 25 hours for a book which never stops being lively. So many fascinating characters are vividly described.
& don't think this is about historical events with no relevance to life in 21st C: far from it! I hadn't realised before how much Eastern Europe was totally recreated by the Paris Conference of 1919, and created border conflicts that are resonating to this day.
Very well read too with a reader who took the trouble to pronounce foreign words (even Chinese) correctly.

First class work.
First class work. This is a terrific recording. Scholarly, stimulating, informative and accessible, a truly splendid account of a hugely important subject. I can’t praise the narration highly enough, and my preference is for older, English baritones speaking in what we used to call RP. Suzanne Toren’s performance is just terrific. Measured, clear, intelligent; illuminating without in any way overshadowing the material. I was particularly impressed with the care she took with the many non-English terms - an absolute delight in comparison to the mangling other narrators have given to the most elementary French and German. Hats off, Ms. Toren, top work. Highly recommended.

In it's centenary year a great red on how the peace failed
Debunks the conventional wisdom of the Versailles Treaty. Give a blow by blow of each line on the map creating borders that continue to cause conflict. It records what was and what could have been

25 hours with zero waffling, very impressive!
This is the first time I've listened to a 25 hour audiobook with zero waffling! Just a list of detailed facts about various regions.
This isn't a good stand-alone books, but is a brilliant work for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of the modern history of the world.
