Summary

Indulge in an all-new recording of this best-selling standalone romance, now narrated in a duet performance by Shane East and Vanessa Edwin!

It was only supposed to be a marriage of convenience....

Let me just say, this whole part-time lover thing was her idea. I’d have gone all in from the start, but hey, when a gorgeous, brilliant woman invites you into her bed, and only her bed...well, I said yes. But then, one hysterical phone call from my brother later, begging me to find myself a wife so grandfather’s business stays in the family, and I need a promotion with Elise.

Turns out a full-time husband suits her needs too, and a temporary marriage of convenience ought to do the trick, until we can simply untie the knot....

As long as no one finds out....

As long as no one gets hurt....

As long as no one falls in love....

But our ending was one I never saw coming.

Critic reviews

"East portrays Christian as utterly captivated by Elise. His warm voice also holds notes of respect for her, and his English accent is a pleasant foil for Edwin's melting French intonation. In this dialogue-driven story, Edwin and East are completely convincing as two hopeless romantics." (AudioFile)

4.5 Super Fun Stars

I absolutely loved how Christian and Elise met, or should I say didn’t meet, but yes, their first sighting. It was obvious they were destined to be together, fate was definitely working its magic. Two divorcees agreeing to have a no strings attached relationship, who end up entering into a marriage of convenience. Sex, not love, etc, etc. Yada yada yada, you know the story, not looking for love, or a permanent relationship for that matter, and you just know it’s all going to go pear shaped. Great characters, although Elise at times was super pigheaded, understandably so, but at times she had me cringing. Christian was adorable, super sexy, and extremely patient with Elise. An enjoyable, easy listen with relatable characters and a fun storyline. I loved the narration from Shane East and Vanessa Edwin. Added to the end was an added bonus of a blooper reel, so funny, Shane and Vanessa sound to have so much fun whilst recording. I loved it.

I have to say this might be one of my favorite LB couples. Christian and Elise were so fun and sexy. They both were outgoing and spontaneous and the banter was perfection. I loved that Elise is a seriously vehement women who isn't shy at all. She is a little broken from her past but instead of letting that bring her down she was just more cautious. Christian was a great guy, he was funny, sweet and incredibly insightful. Then on top of all of that these two had mad chemistry!! In the very beginning when these two meet for the first time I was giggling because that had to be the most interesting way for a couple to meet that I've read before.

As always, my favorite thing about Lauren Blakely books is that the characters are mature and the drama is extremely low. No unnecessary drama added to give the story some excitement because her stories don't need it! I also loved that this felt like a second chance romance when actually it wasn't because there wasn't a first romance really.

The narration was great. Shane East has the best accent and he does great at balancing the humor and the sexy with his characters voice. Vanessa Edwin is one of my new favorite narrators so I was instantly up for listening to this version of the book, especially with it being duet. Great casting in my opinion.

Duel narration is awesome!

I never write reviews, but here it was just something that needed to be said, the story is fun and twists along nicely. But what truly makes this a wonderful book is the duel narration.

So often when reading a book about two people, the narrator needs to change their voice to represent the other character. Now some narrators do this so well that it's not noticeable, but others not so much.

But with the duel narration you never have to wonder who is speaking. In fact I like it so much that the search is on for more books recorded in this manner.

Lauren Blakely is a fabulous writer, I've enjoyed all the books written by her.

Loved the new duet performance!

I’ve enjoyed both performances of this audiobook and like this one the best. Would love to see more duet performances in my romance audiobooks as they bring the conversations more alive.

Love the new Duet Narration!

I originally read and listened to this book when it first released in 2018. When I found out the audiobook was getting an update, I knew it was time for a re-read. It was so wonderful revisiting Christian and Elise's fun and sexy marriage of convenience romance.

Christian and Elise are both driven and independent individuals. They each have some emotional baggage that has left them jaded about love. A chance encounter (or is it fate?) in Denmark throws them into each other's orbits, but a simple mistake keeps them from meeting until a year later in France. Christian and Elise have amazing chemistry from the start and I loved how understanding and supportive they were of each other. One of my favorite scenes was at the soccer field, when Elise came to watch Christian play. The sexual tension and build up was delicious and it intensified even the smallest touches and glances. Yes, their relationship starts out as instalust, but with time, the sexy banter and the push and pull gives way to true connection and emotion. Throw in a marriage of convenience trope to help the family of our hero, and you have a truly entertaining story.

The updated duet style narration with Shane East and Vanessa Edwin was perfect. It really enhanced the story and there are even some bonus scenes as well. These two narrators have wonderful chemistry and Vanessa Edwin is fast becoming my favorite female narrator. The bloopers at the end were especially hilarious and it was fun to hear them laughing and having a great time.

What a fun listen!

I don't know where Lauren Blakely gets her ideas, but each book seems to be better than the last! An impossible feat, this book is the perfect escape. Christian and Elise first meeting is far from conventional. A year later, they meet again, and the chemistry we saw is still there. This couple is not looking for anything serious and love is certainly not part of the equation! Until it is....Elise is a strong, independent woman who has been deceived in the past. I love her determination and fierce loyalty to those she loves. Christian is the perfect compliment to her. When it comes to those he loves, he will do anything to protect them. The banter between these two is priceless, and the choice of places for their dates original and fun. I love that the book is about fate, is low drama and a listen that is just fun!

Christian is performed by Shane East, and his accent is one you can't help but fall for. His warm voice and comedic timing is wonderful. Vanessa Edwin is amazing as Elise, and I just love her voice. She has a young, flirtatious sound and she tunes into Elise's energy perfectly. This duet narration is so much fun and the bloopers were just icing on the cake!

Christian & Elise

▪▪▪Review contains spoilers▪▪▪

Audible Plus review. Stanalone with cameos from other books. Dual POV. Narrators both did a great job and I really enjoyed the duet style narration. Older woman/younger man turned sexual arrangement turned fake marriage turned real marriage. The phrase "consume me" is overused, French conversation immediately translated, the premise is unrealistic, but overall it was an ok story with a few funny & sexy moments. Trigger warnings: Eric & Christian's grandfather dies, Elise's deceased husband was already married when he married her, Eric's wife is trying to divorce him to sell his company.

**uncertain of the spelling of character names**

The story takes place over a year and a half. Christian Ellison (29 then 30; the naked handstander, Chris) is the younger brother of Eric (married to Jandy, lives in London, the head of the family company), was raised in London, was divorced after about a year of marriage to Hanna, lives in Paris, has a home in Copenhagen, Denmark, retired at 28, translates & speaks 6 languages, & his dad is on wife #3. Elise Durand Ellison (33 then 34; aka little mermaid, Friday night lover) was raised in Manhattan by her French parents, is Ian's younger sister (he's 6 years older, married with 2 daughters, lives in NY), lives in Paris, widowed 2 years ago by Eduardo after being married 6 months (he was a polygamist unbeknownst to both women), owns her own ad agency, has dual citizenship, & is a perfume blogger under the name "Sensual Woman." They cross paths when Elise sees him doing naked yoga while she's on a tourist boat. He & his friends participate in their own version of fun they nicknamed "Welcome to spring at 55° north club" and do crazy stuff on the dock in front of tourists to one up each other. Christian & Elise yell across the 50' distance and he asks her out, she goes to the wrong place so they miss each other, they're on the same flight on the way home but she doesn't see him/he's not certain it's her, a year later his grandfather dies at 90 leaving their family company to Eric because Eric's married, Griffin (Christian's friend) is dating one of Elise's friends and she & Christian meet again. They talk and realize they were on the same flight home & that they're still attracted to each other, they go to spend some time together, agree to go on a date, over a short period they have non-romantic dates because she doesn't want to fall in love, Eric calls distraught because his wife is leaving him, Christian & Elise go get him, they have drinks and start to hatch a plan to save the boys' company, the next day Elise & Christian decide to marry so that he will have control of their grandfather's shares meaning he'll have control of the company. They elope to Denmark, have lunch with his mom, visit an amusement park on their wedding night then finally do the deed, Christian helps Elise with market research for her company, Jandy starts doing erratic stuff, Christian & Elise fall for each other but don't want to admit it, Eric & Elise meet with Jandy, Eric pays Jandy off ending the need for Christian & Elise to be married, Elise goes to NY to see her brother & Christian follows her to win her back.

Epilogue Christian & Elise's 2nd wedding with family.

Epilogue 2 Eric & Veronica (Elise's friend, a candy maker/shop owner) are dating. Christian & Elise go on a double date with them a month after Veronica & Eric let them know they're dating. That night Christian decides he wants to start a family. Two months later they have a positive pregnancy test. They have a son.

Epilogue 3 she's pregnant for baby #2 a daughter & their 3 year old son James is doing handstands with Christian.

**Oliver Harris (Eric & Christian's cousin) & Summer's story "Dear Sexy Ex-boyfriend" sneak peak starts at 17 minutes 44 seconds remaining (10 minute 45 second teaser). After the teaser is 5 minutes & 40 seconds of narration bloopers. JP

Once again, Shane East melts my heart!

What a lovely story. I was so excited that Christian was getting his own story, because with his goal to be a kept man, I just needed to know more about him. Christian was a big, sweet, swoony surprise. He knows what he wants, makes no apologies for going after it. He truly believes in fate, and that makes him even more swoony. I love him at this point!

Elise is an amazing woman living in Paris running her business. She and Christian share a strong attraction to one another. Having had her heart broken, Elise understandably is protecting it. But, how do you resist someone like Christian: gorgeous, smart, accomplished, very comfortably well off.

In this refreshed tale, Shane East and Vanessa Edwin bring everything to life in living color! I could see, smell, and taste so much in this story. It's a testament to Lauren's great ability for details, and you feel the emotion with Shane and. Vanessa.

I didn't consider this book a second-chance story, but more of a second chance at a first chance. I loved this story very early on, and it just got stronger as the story unfolded. I always love to see who Lauren will insert from previous books, and my wish was granted for this one. I won’t spoil it, but those who follow Lauren and her cities, you should be able to narrow down to a few people.

Duet narrations are the best!!!

I really wished that all audiobooks could be done in this form of duet narration. They're the best! The story is funny and sexy and the narrators do an outstandind performance (10 stars!).
Plus Shane East who has a british accent sexy as f...also speaks in french which is just...there are no words. Just listen. You won't regret it! Oh and I loved the bloopers. It's great to hear they're having a good time behind the scenes.

Mix ups and postponements

Christian and Elise's first date never happened, although it could have if there wasn't a mix up in their meeting place. Fast forward a year and by chance they meet again through mutual aquaintenances. Then the whirlwind begins and it's full of romance, dirty deeds and plans that begin with "it seemed to be a good idea at the time".
The story was cute, a bit ridiculous in a funny kind of way, and definitely worth listening to. The narrators Shane East and Vanessa Edwin were both delightful.
