You and Your Children Can Learn Another Language!
Have you ever wished you could teach your child another language? Have you ever wished you could speak a second (or third) language? Does the thought of language-learning seem overwhelming or intimidating? Please listen to this book! It will change your mind and your life, and your child’s future in the best possible way.
Daniel O’Hern shares a wealth of personal experience, practical tips and perspective adjustments about language-learning. His book will help you overcome any hurdle that is keeping you from jumping into the adventure of raising bilingual children.
I grew up monolingual, to monolingual parents. Despite loving high school Spanish, I never had real-world opportunities to practice, so retention was limited. I reached fluency in Portuguese very quickly as an adult, through immersion in Brazilian culture. Later I studied linguistics, then learned an indigenous Brazilian language. All these experiences convinced me that anyone who goes through life speaking only one language is missing out on so much. As this book emphasizes, speaking at least two languages opens up countless doors to new relationships, cultural experiences, mental and emotional benefits, job opportunities, and fun!
Yes, for both children and adults, language-learning is supposed to be fun! O’Hern suggests so many ideas of how to make this a reality. He also does a great job of reminding us that every family is different, and every context is different. So he doesn’t try to tell you which language you should have your child learn or exactly how to make it happen. Instead, he shares many specific scenarios and factors to consider as you figure out the language that will serve your child best or be the easiest to learn, or that makes the most sense based on your family’s background. It is so helpful and affirming to hear how to think through and evaluate our options, and to be assured that no matter what language we choose, growing up bilingual will be a wonderful gift to our children!
Ever since my first days immersed in Portuguese, I felt that my brain was being stretched in new ways. It seemed really hard and intense, yet healthy and invigorating, like the mental equivalent of that perfect physical workout, in which you go beyond your normal limits, but without injury, and prove you can do more than you ever dreamed. Thanks to the scientific explanation in this book, I now understand why language learning feels that way, and that it truly is a really positive thing for brain health.
One tiny warning, though! Listening to this book might get you so excited about connecting with a new language that you find yourself sidetracked from your other plans for the day because you can’t wait another minute to start building a personalized language-learning strategy and planning how your family can prepare for and engage our multilingual world! Your children will be so grateful to you for taking this step and you will look back at this decision as one of the best you’ve ever made. So buy this book and let the author be one of your friends and advisors on the journey. He speaks with knowledge of the subject and passion for culture and customs, children, family relationships, and successful learning.

What a great learning book!
Learning languages is never bored. I would like my kids to speak two or more languages, but don’t know how to start. I am concerned learning a different language makes them confused. Since I stop my idea. However, this book makes me reconsider my thought. I have learnt how to start. Take a step at a time, keep study session short and sweet. The best resource ever. I would highly recommend it.
