Summary

An orphan searching for her future unlocks a destiny she never imagined...

War has engulfed Destia, reaching even the remote country-side, where foundling Eva Thirsk lives. When army recruiters come to town, Eva sees a chance to find a place where she truly belongs—something she’s never found on her adopted family’s farm. She enlists, hoping for adventure...and perhaps a chance to learn what happened to her parents.

But when one of her missions goes disastrously wrong, a powerful enemy is accidentally freed. The Venistrare Warlock, sealed away eons ago to protect Destia, has been unleashed—and things begin to change for Eva.

Strange visions, an electric sense of energy, and an odd feeling of deep connection to Perrell, the pack dragon she’s befriended… If she didn’t know better, Eva would think she’s somehow gained magic. Including the ability to bond to a dragon, but that’s not possible at her age…is it?

As the war rages on, the stakes grow higher each day. Can Eva and Perrell figure out Eva’s new powers in time—or will they be consumed by the fires of annihilation?

YA fantasy female coming into her own. Book 1.

YA fantasy female coming into her own. Book 1.

Slight misnomer in title as main character is a 16 year old female abandoned by her parents at time of war and adopted by an elderly couple. That she shares a first name with the author may be significant. She is mourning the recent death of her adoptive father and feeling restive about life on the farm with repetive and thankless chores. An opportunity to branch out and try something different arises and she grabs at it. However, it is much less glamorous and interesting than expected. Upsides are: she meets a chivalarous 17 year old male dragon rider and a female dragon rider shows sisterly solidarity. The main boon is developing an affinity with a female pack dragon.
Prejudice and class snobbery abound with fighting dragons, who are much larger, looking down on smaller and non-combatative pack dragons. The same applies to their riders who have telepathic bonds with their mounts as do dragons amongst themselves. Another distinction is that dragon riders who have bonded with their mounts also have magic weilding abilities. In this book, these are linked to elements and have different utility dependent upon the linked element .
Our heroine makes discoveries about herself and her background, but still has harsh lessons to learn about who can be trusted and their motivations. There is peril for those we learn to care about and a few twists in the plot. There is a satisfying and just resolution whilst setting up the next instalment without it being a cliffhanger. I would like to hear more of this tale.
The narrator does a good job of differentiating male/female and dragon voices so it is easy to know who is talking. Appropriate emotion and pacing of the action is also conveyed.
