Summary
Winner of the 2015 Desmond Elliott Prize
1976: Peggy Hillcoat is eight. She spends her summer camping with her father, playing her beloved record of The Railway Children, and listening to her mother's grand piano, but her pretty life is about to change.
Her survivalist father, who has been stockpiling provisions for the end, which is surely coming soon, takes her from London to a cabin in a remote European forest. There he tells Peggy the rest of the world has disappeared.
Her life is reduced to a piano that makes music but no sound and a forest where all that grows is a means of survival. And a tiny wooden hut that is everything.

Excellent, interesting read, great use of words
This was a fascinating end of world/survivalist story. Really well written with such interesting turns of phrase. Absolutely loved it, hooked and loved the way it was told and the ending.

Unusual story
The storyline was strange and too long winded and I actually jumped some of it and the ending was insubstantial. But the narration was superb so overall I quite enjoyed it.

Scarily realistic story of a father gone mad...
I was in two minds about buying this audio book - we all guard our precious 'credits', and don't want to waste them. And even after I started listening, I thought that maybe I had made a mistake.
However, as the book progressed the dog got longer walks whatever the weather. The story of Punzel and her father in their hut and their desperate quest for food was compelling, as was the unravelling of their minds as they faced their isolation. The story jumps from 'present day' to her life in Die Hutte, and I felt that her return to civilisation was dealt with realistically.
I particularly liked the way that Punzel matured during their years away, changing from a child to a young woman.
Terribly sad in parts, but ultimately uplifting - and, yes, I didn't see the ending coming!

Powerful, detailed and immersive
I hadn't heard of Claire Fuller until last week but feel I was given a gift. this story had me gripped eager to know more follow Peggy on her journey. not one single chapter dissappointed. i had the pleasure of meeting Claire and thank you for enriching my library with this wonderful tale.

Ponderous
This book was too slow. I got fed up after 7 chapters and gave up. I wanted to enjoy it as the previous reviews and summary were good, but I just couldn't be bothered. Sorry

Fascinating idea. Hauntingly possible.
Beautifully narrated. Recommended to the romantic in us. Seen through the eyes of a sweet natured young girl innocently believing in the reality of her fathers vision.

Really good novel with an unexpected ending
Really good narration tyhe best I've heard in a long time. Excellent accents and voices. The story was slow to begin with but i felt it needed most elements to have that overall feel. The middle is a bit of a struggle but still really well written, when in the mood it was really good.
