Editor reviews
The protagonist of Others literally begins his journey in hell as a tormented soul until two angels make him a proposition for a chance at redemption through a mission on the surface. Reborn as a private investigator in England with no memory of his past life, he is sent on an investigation that takes him to a nursing home and unlocks mysterious secrets of his personal and the demons of Others. Kris Dyer performs the audiobook with a gripping and macabre style that puts you into the detective's plight. Any fan of James Herbert's will delight at this chilling and inventive tale that keeps your blood pumping until the very end.
Summary
The ugly truth. Nicholas Dismas is a Private Investigator, but like no other that has gone before him. He carries a secret to which not even he has the answer. Dismas is hired to find a missing baby. One that was taken away at birth... Or was it?
His investigation takes him to a mysteriously located place called Perfect Rest, a nursing home for the elderly. Here Dismas will discover the dark secret of the Others. And in an astonishing and spectacular finale he will resolve the enigma of his own existence.
James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages.
Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.
Critic reviews
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory" ( Daily Mail)

Mind blowing
One of the best books I’ve ever listened to! Read impeccably well, heartbreaking story and had me gripped to the very end.

Wasn’t sure at first
When I started listening, I wasn’t sure about the reader. I thought he was a bit monotone but, I stuck with it.
I can honestly say, I really enjoyed it. The reader is, in fact, really good and I enjoyed listening to him. Give it a try, if you like Herbert, you’ll like this.

A lot of themes, but not that much depth.
There are a lot of interesting themes and subjects brought up, but not that much depth or exploration of them.
Starts off interestingly enough, but I felt the ending was a bit weak. Narrator did generally a good job.

Less than Average Herbert fare.
Narrator reads in a singsong style which is illsuited to the genre. x1.1speed helped but i won't be listening again (even though it was "free").

Good concept
The plot itself is very good, and most aspects such as the language, characters and construct are very good.
I grew impatient with overlong festering descriptions, dwelling on Dis’ infirmities/deformities, and a bit of conflict in his behaviour such as coolly breaking into a dangerous place and then becoming frozen into inaction when danger threatens.
But overall a good story excellently performed.

Truly awful narration
The book is first class.
It is time Kris Dyer was taken to court. He is not fit for purpose. Whoever gives him the job. It needs to be re-narrated

Another masterpiece from Herbert
I had forgotten so much of this book I thoroughly enjoyed listening all over again. Great character development, great twisting plot. Herbert writes in a way I have always loved.
The only downside to this book is the narration when speaking female characters. Sounded like a stuffed nosed Julian Clarey!
