Summary

Runner has a problem. He and 499,000 men and women are trapped in a game. He also just happens to be the only person from IT who could log everyone out safely. And he doesn't remember his password.

He, like everyone else in this nightmare, had his memory scrambled or lost in the process of being loaded into the game. A single garbled message is his only clue to how to save everyone.

The problem is that whoever loaded them into the game loaded their minds completely. If they die, their brains get wiped.

Now it's time for Runner to flex his skills as a power gaming min maxer and see what he can do. Because every time he levels, he might gain the memory of the password. Time to go hardcore.

Slow start but worth it!

Really enjoyed the book and eager to listen to the next one later on in my queue of books. Difficult to get into but worth the wait.

Great book, narration slightly less than perfect

I love this series, I read the books a while ago and decided to give the audio version a go so I can listen while driving.

The story and characters are as strong as I remember, and the plot and 'sense of peril' are well done.

The narration was good, with little elements that worked well (like an echo to the voice when it's the MC's internal thoughts). The only reason I'm not giving that 5/5 is there are times when the voices and tones used don't match the description, and I couldn't help find they jarred - if the character says something in 'a warm soft voice' according to the description then that is what you expect to hear, and when you don't as I say it jars. If I could give it 4.5/5 I would, but as I can't I have to go with a 4 for that.

However as an overall rating it's definitely a 5/5.

great listen

this is the second series I've listened to by the author and it's a great story, with lots of social concerns and reflections from the main protagonist.

Really entrancing

Some familiarity with RPG gaming would be useful and sometimes the computer interface can be a little distracting, however the story and the awakening of In game characters is really well portrayed and described.

The only comment I would make is that while Jeff Hays is really excellent, he has employed a quiet voice and a normal voice and sometimes the quiet voice can be difficult to hear. This is in no way a major detractor and I would recommend the story heartedly.

Really enjoyed this book. It was really easy to get into the story and the narration from Jeff Hays was top notch as always.

another one of those stories with people stuck in a virtual reality world. I quite enjoyed it. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Enjoyable if not gripping

Slow and a bit confusing to start off with the book gathers pace and expands on the idea made famous by Red Dwarf. Helpful if the reader is familiar with normal RPG terminology and strategy.

Enjoying it and am looking forward to the cross over with hero's for sale

Good overall.

Narrator was OK, but struggled to get the voices across for the characters, interrupts in particular were glaring, but this may have been more due to the writing and single narrator, than the narrator himself.
Story wise it's not top of the line, but if you like "trapped in a game" esc stories this is one of the better ones and a great listen.
