Summary

Zoe Ball's BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick.

Mesmerising and haunting, Emma Flint's Other Women is a devastating story of fantasy, obsession inspired by a murder that took place almost a hundred years ago.

'A pitch-perfect historical mystery' – The Guardian
'Bloody brilliant' – Dinah Jefferies, author of The Missing Sister
'Compelling, twisty, and wonderfully suspenseful' – Claire Fuller, author of Unsettled Ground

It is 1923 and a country is in mourning. Thousands of husbands, fathers, sons and sweethearts were lost in the war, millions more returned home wounded and forever changed.

Beatrice Cade is an orphan, unmarried and childless. After her brother's death, she decides to make a new life for herself. She takes a room in a Bloomsbury ladies’ club and a job in the City. But just when her new world is starting to take shape, a fleeting encounter threatens to ruin everything.

Kate Ryan is an ordinary wife and mother. Since the end of the war, she has managed to build an enviable life with her husband and young daughter. From the outside, they seem like a normal, happy family. But when two policemen knock on Kate's door and jeopardize the facade Kate has created, she knows what she has to do to protect the people she loves. And suddenly, two women who never should have met are connected for ever . . .

other women

I found this story rather difficult to get into initially. Perhaps it would have benefited from more ruthless editing? However, it is well worth perseverance. A gripping tale and excellent performances from the two narrators.

Highly recommended!

I was recommended to listen to this story and so glad I was told about it! Gripping! Really comes to life listening to the two different narrators too. Had me hooked! Fascinating too particularly based on a true story! If you love a thriller do listen to this, you won’t regret it!

interesting listen

a good story with well crafted characters. I didn't realise it was based on a true story. some of the courtroom comments were disturbing and cringe worthy, but no doubt reflective of the time
one of the narrators let dropping her t'd which was really irritating

Feeling grateful to be a woman in today's day and age!

A brilliantly written book, you can completely connect with both the main women. It gives an interesting glimpse of the culture in 1920s and how women were treated. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.

It’s quite superb

Expertly structured, atmospheric, and an authentic depiction of the times and mores in which it is set. Much more than just a crime novel, it is a deeply affecting experience. And a special word for the actors - I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and you did this wonderfully. Thank you.

Unexpectedly good

In the begining of the book i had my doubts especially it being set in the 1900’s. As the book progressed it had me hooked! If you are just starting to listen just keep going!! Loved it at the end.

Excellent book

I’ve really enjoyed listening to the narration and the clearly described events of the story which had me gripped from start to finish. Loved the voices and the way it was so clearly written that you always knew exactly where you were in the twisting thread if the tale. The Afterword and Postscript are interesting too. Brilliant

This is a masterpiece.

This book has been written from the heart. Flint's understanding of the English Language is, at times, breathtaking. I haven't had the pleasure of finishing a book and sighing out 'Wow' in a very long time.
The love triangle between Kate, Bea and Tom isn't unusual passe. As we all know 'the heart wants what the heart wants'. But at what cost?
The emotional trip you are taken on is so well described you feel as if you are there. With every comment, Tom speaks and every move he makes, you can't help but hope!
I've already recommended this book to all of my friends.
It's a corker.
