Story
Eliza Grayling, born in Sydney when the colony itself was still an infant, has lived there all her 32 years. Too tall, too stern - too old, now - for marriage, she looks out for her reclusive father, Joshua, and wonders about his past. There is a shadow there: an old enmity. When Joshua Grayling is offered the chance for a reckoning with his nemesis, Eliza is horrified. It involves a sea voyage with an uncertain, probably violent, outcome. Insanity for an elderly blind man, let alone a drunkard.

Story
Darwin, Summer, 1963. The humidity sat heavy and thick over the town as Senior Constable Ned Potter looked down at a body that had been dragged from the shallow marshland. He didn't need a coroner to tell him this was a bad death. He didn't know then that this was only the first. Or that he was about to risk everything looking for answers.

superb and harrowing read
I was moved and upset at the same time. Not only a well written novel with a great story line but a deep insight into race and prejudice. Wasn't sure the author could
emulate The Rules of Cricket but he has shown himself to be a truly great author.

Terrible waste of precious credit
I found the story reviews intriguing so I have bought the book, but now I wish I hadn't. The plot is unbearably dull and predictable, the characters two-dimensional (if that).
What made me struggle through half of it is the narrator - he did an amazing job of a book way unworthy of his talents.

Riveting and Timely
This is a great book and performance especially considering what is happening across the globe now relative to refugees. Very well done and thought provoking.
