About this listen
For Clara Andrews, death is a season. Daily she visits the grave of her late husband, Tom, who died so soon after their brief marriage. Her grandmother fears that Clara’s grief will make death more appealing than life and that her granddaughter will fall into a decline.
When she suggests that Clara accompany her on calls to a friend, Clara agrees out of a sense of obligation. The following week, the call is returned and accompanying the ladies is Matthew Field, who knew her husband Tom when they were schoolmates together. Enraptured by the opportunity to have Tom restored to her through the memories of Matthew, whose visits brighten the barren winter, Clara welcomes his calls.
But when Matthew tells her that he has developed feelings for her, Clara rebuffs him, never wanting to betray her late husbands memory.
Disappointed, Matthew returns to London, leaving Clara to think about her love for Tom, and her future.
Is she dead or alive? Is there really a future for one so broken and tied to a love that will never return? It is a question that Clara must find an answer for as she decides what she should do about the husband that she loved, and the friend who is, perhaps, more than a friend to her.
