Summary
We will develop only the strength our environment demands of us. When our environment fails to challenge our depths, we are tasked to create one that does.
Practitioners across the globe continue to use jujitsu as a tool for personal development. For many, the jujitsu academy is the one place in which we purposefully practice virtuous action. On Jiu Jitsu seeks to codify the mechanisms by which jujitsu shapes the individual, as the character traits required to achieve mastery in sport are the same that our highest humanity requires.
It is the hope of the author that the articulation of these benefits will ensure the listener's continued practice of self-mastery through this sacred medium.

Superb
This audiobook is brilliantly narrated, perfectly complimenting the content, which is without hyperbole, profound. I got this because of a deep interest in BJJ, but the philosophy and wisdom expressed by the author is applicable to everyone wishing to improve themselves and serve others better. Highly positive and enriching piece of work, a gift.

Jiu Jitsu is the best medicine against PTSD
this book was absolutely amazing and in so many various different ways it has encompassed the passionate love for an art form that so many other people already love. No matter if you loved you Jitsu or have never spent one minute on the map, this book will change your life. The amount of times that he quotes CS Lewis alone makes my heart Happy. But above and beyond the quotes the depth and honesty with which he speaks about this subject is I believe unseen in any other book that I have read best far. if you are looking to change your game in Life or in martial arts, this book is for you. Please read this book at least five times and then on your 6 time share it with somebody else. Cannot say enough how the simple $30 it cost to purchase it was not enough. This is truly a gem among the variety of different ridiculous books and I'm so happy I stumbled upon it. Chris, if you read this I really appreciate your words sir. I look forward to the possible chance to be able to slap and pound and roll around on the map while you submit me until I can't breathe straight. :-)

Matakas’ words are like a balm for the soul.
“Opportunity lies where responsibility has been abdicated.” Jordan B. Peterson
—
It was JBP who woke me up to the problem (and solution) in our current culture. I realized that I must take radical responsibility for myself, and that others must as well. Only that has the power to change our course. But, Matakas completed that revelation in me with his focus on meaning coming from service to others. When we take responsibility for ourselves, focusing our lives on becoming better (with which jiu jitsu helps tremendously), the real meaning of it all is when we use what we’ve learned to help others. Both this book and ‘Five Rules For White Belts’ have brought another level of appreciation to this art. Thank you.

The Highest Version of Ourselves
I have loved the art of jiu jitsu for years but perhaps never saw so clearly that it's really the art of living well. In his book, Professor Matakas elegantly articulates so much of what jiu jitsu not only is, but also what it brings to our lives off the mat. This is a beautiful study of life through the lens of our practice and I was not only moved by it, but so much that I am gifting it to close friends for them to enjoy. Thank you, Professor Matakas.

Great and deep explanation to help anyone to understand higher purposes and outcomes of Jiu Jitsu and also practical guidance for the role each person plays in a Jiu Jitsu academy, independently of mastery level.

Fire rekindled
I practiced jiu-jitsu for about four years but got away from it due to a variety of factors (divorce, pandemic, moving halfway across the country, cancer). Now that I’m re-settled, the pandemic is waning, I’m settled in a new home, and I’m healthier. I don’t have anymore excuses. I stumbled across this audiobook the other day and it is rekindled the BJJ fire in me. Thank you for the work you put into this book and sharing your experience and wisdom. Very much appreciated. Please write more.
