Summary

Boston - What happens to lovers after the happy-ever-after moment? What goes on behind the closed doors of a relationship once the commitment is made? What does romance turn into when the hands of time keep turning? Olive Oil and White Bread is a novel that dares to answer those questions.

Angie Righetti is the daughter of a sprawling but close-knit Italian American family. She's out and they're proud. Jillian Clark's family is the white bread to Angie's olive oil. Stoic and emotionally buttoned up, they don't want to think about Jillian's sexuality. It's 1988 when they move in together, on the brink of starting their careers. Like every couple at the start of their life together, they expect to live happily ever after. And for 23 years life happens: They change jobs, buy a house, get a dog, and deal with money issues and the death of a parent. They fight, love, cry, play, make mistakes, have regrets, and try to be good to each other and to everybody else. Like most of us they tumble into a routine that turns into a rut that leads to distraction and danger.

In 96 Hours, Georgia Beers gave herself the challenge of writing a romance set in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. And she succeeded, coming up with a book that garnered awards and great reviews. She returns with a new challenge - writing a romance that starts, rather than ends, with the happy-ever-after.

Beautifully moving & wondefully realistic romance

This book was a beautiful breath of fresh air. The characters were so believable and lovable. The sad moments were genuinely moving, the happy bits something you could share in easily and a really good read overall.

I loved how real life historical events built a believable chronological framework to hang the fiction on.

I also loved the section headings being song lyrics from that era.

A really simple and elegant story about the genuine complexities of longterm love.

I would LOVE to read something else by this author. x

Wow

I listened to this book for the established couple in my bingo! But I was in for a treat!

I’ve not read many establish couple romances and I think I may be in love with this trope…

Angie is a workaholic, loving and caring but always missing from her home life and a pattern was set very early on in the book… She was throughout a very likable character but I felt myself more drawn to Jillian from the outset!

Jillian is a sweet simple person, loved her job and loved her partner… Throughout the book I was drawn to her sweetness and I guess you could call her my favourite of the pair!

That shifted and I found myself entirely uncomfortable and very saddened by the circumstances later on in the book.. However, I eventually processed it and understood to an extent of what happened and how it did…

The author done an amazing job at immersing me in the story and I truly felt like I understood how both MC’s were feeling!

I’ve read a few by the author now and this has been by far the best one yet! I absolutely loved this story!

I wanted to give it five stars but...

The start and end, and some bits in between were great. But I honestly couldn't get to grips with someone who would work all those hours being unhappy and too tired to even spend time or be intimate with your other half, just to make money that the other half clearly didn't care about. It makes zero sense to me, and honestly made me dislike Angelina quite alot. I'm not advocating cheating in the slightest but I can seriously understand why it happened.

beautiful life story

this is the most poignant book in this genre I've listened to, extremely moving but turbulent, in 2011 I can imagine, and hope, there were more proposals on one day than ever before, happy ending at the start, a life span any relationship can identify with in some way, and an emotional happy ending, writer and narrator excelled to create a work of art.

An emotional rollercoaster of a read!

This book is both heartbreaking and uplifting. It charts the story of Angie and Jillian from the 90’s through to 2011. It is one of the most real and honest books I’ve read. I cried, laughed, and cried some more! I even shouted out loud at Jillian at one point! This is a departure from Georgia Beers’s usual script, but I enjoyed every breathtaking moment.

Abby Craden’s narration is faultless as always.

Better than the title suggests

Another good Georgia Beers book. More about life with a long term partner than the romance and initial spark of some of the other books of hers, which makes you think about your own relationships. Worth a listen!

Easy going and enjoyable

Nice read, but why do all romantic fictions always have a cheating storyline? Enjoyable and easy going book - would recommend.

A wonderful lesfic life lesson

Very enjoyable romance. Great plot, good characterisation, refreshingly a story rather than semi-porn. Thanks for that Georgia Beers.
IMO, Abby Craden's predictably (as expected) fomulaic narration, which I cannot stand, is the only negative point in this production. Such a shame that Audible does not commission actresses with a more representative range of voices/accents to read lesfic novels. Hope it's not an indication of homophobia, racism and/or sexism?
