Das Hörspiel befasst sich mit der Entstehung des Weihnachtsliedes "Oh du Fröhliche".

Nach der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig im Jahr 1813 herrscht Not und Elend in der Stadt Weimar. Kinder sterben an Seuchen. Auch vier Kinder der Familie Falk sterben an Typhus. Bei einem Spaziergang durch die Stadt trifft Falk auf einen Bettler, der ihn in ein Lager für verwaiste Kinder bringt. Daraufhin gründet Falk ein "Rettungshaus für verwaiste Kinder". Den dort aufgenommenen Kindern widmete er 1816 das heute als Weihnachtslied bekannte "O du Fröhliche". Falk verwendete die Melodie eines Marienliedes, das auf den Text "O sanctissima, o purissima (piissima), dulcis virgo Maria" in Italien gesungen wird. Er fand dieses Lied in Johann Gottfried Herders (1744-1803) Sammlung "Stimmen der Völker in Liedern".
