First, I read the book, and then I listened to it.
Below is my original review of the book straight after reading it. Even though it's a YA book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then I listened to the audio version, and it came alive under the very talented Talia Carver. So what can I say apart from I then went on to listen to the following two books. Well worth the listen.
What a start to a YA series
I wasn't sure that this book would be for me, but I can't wait to start book two.
I loved the whole world-building and the characters. Raiden is a Prince and the main heir to the throne, and Egan is a local blacksmith apprentice who's actually a dragon. Egan's secret must be kept as Dragons are not known in this land.
The story develops well, and their friendship grows into a budding romance. There is no happy ending as such as the story continues into books 2 and 3.

Enjoyable start to a series
This was an enjoyable start to the series. We got immediate world building as the author tells us the history of the Seven Realms and how they came to be. We’re then immediately thrown into some action and introduced to Raiden - heir to the throne of the Sixth Realm. I really liked Raiden, he definitely takes his character from his father (who we see is a wise, benevolent and kind monarch). Egan is so sweet and flustered around Raiden and I loved how their relationship grows. He’s hiding a big secret - no one can know that he’s actually a dragon shifter.
I really love that the sexuality of Raiden and Egan, and their blossoming relationship isn’t a point of contention in the story - and that King Rodick (Raiden’s father) is accepting of this (something that all parents should be).
We have some great side characters too (I particularly liked Raiden’s younger brother) which definitely kept me engaged.
First time listening to this narrator- and I’ll definitely listen to more. Enjoyable and engaging.

A great intro to the Dragon King series.
Of Heart and Wings is a great introduction to the world of the Dragon King series and the lives of Raiden and Egan. Its a beautiful portrayal of first love in a fantasy setting. I love McQueen's version of dragons and the lore she has created. The pace of the story is slow in parts as McQueen lingers on certain moments of characters' internal dilemmas, but this doesn't detract anything. She takes great care in setting up the world and each new character that arrives is distinct. I really liked the flirty Queen of the Third. This is a very accessible and enjoyable novel and a good intro into the genre for younger readers.
Audiobook: Talia Carver makes a good job of differentiating the voices of various characters and has a steady pace to the narrative. Their emotional range in the dialogue is not always great (and the younger aged voices made me laugh a little), but they do give a more matter of fact delivery which allows the story itself to take centre stage. Its a very clean narration that is what you want from any audio book. I certainly felt transported into the story and look forward to the next book.

Dear Talia Carver
You are the perfect voice for this series!! Your performance of Egan and Raiden is EXACTLY how I imagined these two in my head. (*Spoiler-ish alert*) When Raiden told Egan “I can help you carry it”, and further along when Egan repeated it back, my heart actually melted. It is my favorite part of the book and you nailed it!!!
I cannot wait to hear the rest of the series. Please record Bound in Fire as soon as you can.

Delightful YA queer dragon romance
Story: really enjoyed this queer fantasy romance! with DRAGONS! the beginning was a bit slow, but once we meet Egan and get their dorky, awkward flirting I am in love!
narrator: the narrator did a great job of putting emotion into their voices! I really felt their grief, anger, and confusion come out clearly. some of the voices felt a bit inconsistent at times, but overall this was well done, and I would listen to this narrator again.
highly recommend this series!!

Dragon shifters and a kingdom to rule
This takes several of the standard fairy tale tropes - dragons, princes who must assume the throne unexpectedly and that blacksmith who always has secret abilities just waiting to be discovered - mixes them with shifters, an m/m romance and humor to produce a wonderful, light read. This is a new author for me and I just love the sweet, no angst plot and two main characters who are clearly meant to be together. I have been discovering some great new narrators lately and this is one of them. I thought all the emotions were right there grabbing me and pulling me into the story as was the humor.

Raiden and Egan
I received an ARC of this audio for my honest review. This is the 1st book in this series and we find out about Egan and Raiden. Egan is a blacksmith’s apprentice with a secret—he is a dragon shifter in a world where dragons aren’t believed in. Raiden is the 1st born and crown prince of his kingdom, survives an unexpected attack by a rival kingdom. They strike up a quick friendship, and I love how sweet and caring they were for the other. Egan gives Raiden a sense of normalcy. Can't wait for the next book. Great story of love and loyalty. I thought Talia Carver did an excellent job narrating this story.

Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much Debbie McQueen for giving me the opportunity to review this beautiful book!!!
I listened to this on Audible narrated by Talia Carver, and it was absolutely perfect 💜 the voices were so perfect, and I loved this story so much!
Raiden is the prince of the Sixth Realm, next in line for his father’s crown. King Rodik is a fair and just king who loves his people, and Raiden strives to take after him. He’s trying his best to balance responsibility with the rest of his life.
Egan is a blacksmith’s assistant, working for his awful stepfather. He also has a huge secret that he must hide from the realm…but when he since a man’s life at risk, he jumps to save him and his secret is revealed. And the man happens to be the prince. Instead of being horrified, Prince Raiden is in awe and completely intrigued!
After the King is attacked, the Sixth knows a battle is eminent. And Prince Raiden must do what he can to support his kingdom.
This book was beautiful! Seeing Raiden discover that the world is bigger than he thought, seeing Egan have experiences he never thought he would, watching them grow closer and start falling for each other. The building of their relationship is so lovely, and the king’s meddling is both sweet and hilarious! This is such a magical and fascinating world to be in and I can’t wait to see where this story goes 💙
