About this listen
In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous.
There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the attention of the totalitarian Council that rules the Land....

Love this Series!
I have read and listened to this series repeatedly, first when I was in high school, again when I started my first job and had the privilege of meeting the truly wonderful author, and then every subsequent wintery holiday when I felt like cosying up with a great series that would take me away from everyday life.
In a post-apocalyptic world under totalitarian rule orphan Elspeth and the other ‘misfits’ – children born with unusual mental abilities – are sentenced to exile in remote Council farms for treatment. With her freedom destroyed and suffering from the loss of her parents Elspeth must hide her powers to survive. Dealing with themes of prejudice, discrimination and cruelty but also resilience of the human spirit I can’t help myself to keep coming back to this series. Even though the release of each subsequent book in the Obernewtyn Chronicles took many years of anxious nail biting , I can’t help but feel it was worth the wait!

Brilliantly read version of the book
I first read this book back in the mid 90's whilst at school and fell in love with it and Elspeth so was really looking forward to listening to it on audio, especially when I found out that it was narrated by Isobelle herself.
The story follows Elspeth Gordie a misfit who gets sent to Obernewtyn up in the mountains. The book is set in the future after a nuclear holocaust, which they call the Great White and follows Elspeth on her journey for orphan home to Obernewtyn and her story whilst there. It then leads on perfectly to the second in the series - The Farseekers, which I will be listening to next
