Editor reviews
Oath of Honor is the third book in the First Responders series by Radclyffe. Combining personal drama with political realism a la "The West Wing", this audiobook is the story of Captain Wes Masters, first physician to the fictional president of the United States, Andrew Powell. As if the high-stress job wasn't enough, social rivalries and romantic intrigues break out within the Presidential Protection Detail. This couldn't be good for the President's safety….
Betsy Zajko's expressive voice has a smooth, silk-like tone, allowing listeners to really digest each detail of the prose.
Summary
Navy Captain Wes Masters, newly posted to head the White House Medical Unit, is a physician with only one patient, but her job is twenty-four/seven. Her charge is simple - protect and preserve the well-being of the most powerful man in the world - the President of the United States. As the First Physician, Wes must travel by President Andrew Powell's side, in the hot zone, and with everything she needs to save his life, or in case he becomes injured or falls ill. Her job gets even harder when she has to prove she is up to the task to Secret Service Agent, Evyn Daniels, a member of the elite Presidential Protection Detail, and a woman who challenges Wes on more than just the professional front...
Evyn isn't happy about inserting Wes into PPD, especially since Evyn believes the post should have gone to her good friend, Dr. Peter Chang. The stakes soon get even higher for all involved, when Homeland Security's Deputy Director, Cameron Roberts, is brought in to investigate a possible security breach, and everyone, including Evyn, is a suspect.

Good voice, good story.
Good voice, nice and easy to listen to. Good story, it follows on nicely from the previous books in the series.
Unfortunately I spent quite some time re listening due to the fact she has no difference in voices for the other main characters. I got easily confused as to which character was speaking when they were speaking to each other!
Also, she mis pronounces certain key words and there's no way you can ignore them as they're vital to the story at that time.. ( No spoilers here) Overall a good follow on story with characters from other books thrown in, and worth the read even if you've not read the previous books.

Narrator is very good
This lesfic story has the usual holes and anomalies in the plot, which are common to Radclyffe novels, but the romantic attraction and sex scenes are well written. Betsy Xajko struggles for a while to bring real meaning and feeling into her reading but overall she is a very good narrator and later on she is excellent.

It's all coming together
I really want to smack Russo's smugness right of the side of his face.
It's all so plausible that's the scary part. I did want to tell Evan to get a grip and Wes to stop being so nice but... that's probably the teacher in me.
Can't wait to read Firestorm and Price of Honor.

Sadly this feels like too much of the same.
I saw the summary for this audio book, and honestly decided that it could easily be another cliched lesbian romance novel, full of two dimensional characters, sex, and not a lot else. However, I really loved 'Turn Back Time' and liked 'Trauma Alert' so I was willing to give this a try based on those books because they managed to avoid that trap, and have characters and plots that became three dimensional and were stories that had you caring about the characters and the way the story ended.
One advantage of being a member of audible is the fact that you can return books if you find they aren't quite what you were expecting, and because of that I decided it was worth the risk.
Sadly I wasn't wrong about my initial assessment based on the summary. And unlike 'Turn Back Time' and 'Trauma Alert' this really didn't seem to fit into the 'First Responders' category. In fact, I would have said this was more likely to have fit into the 'Honor' series of books.
Added to that, the recording and narrator are frankly really, really bad. There is an awful echo/reverberation with this recording and that constantly distracted me from the story, and it had me wondering which barn they recorded this in! Plus, at times it was hard to work out which character was speaking because there seems to be no real way the narrator was separating the characters. Far too many recordings feel as though they have been rushed onto the audible catalog with little or no consideration to the quality of the engineering behind the work, so it was a real disappointment to find that even works by the more popular lesbian authors have fallen into this trap.
Too many lesbian novels have fallen into the routine of the two dimension, which is sad because with a little thought they could be so much more. And I feel that this is such a story, that moment in time when an author sticks to what the public have decided they like, and so it gets churned out in such a way that it all could easily belong to the same story without any real separation of character or plot. Given the depth of stories with the earlier titles that I have mentioned, titles by this author that I have enjoyed, this came as a real let down. And that is a real shame, especially from an author who has exhibited such depth in the past.

Would you listen to Oath of Honor again? Why?
Yes. I plan to when I get back to that section in the honor series now that I know it is a part of a series kind of.
What does Betsy Zajko bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I enjoyed her a lot she made the hot scenes very enjoyable. She had a good range in voices that made it nice to listen to .

Narrator was bad
This story was a good plot line and great overall addition to the series. The narrator ruined it for me. There was no clear distinction between the characters making West and Evan blur into one person . Radclyffe always has done an amazing job of capturing the dominate features of a strong female and I believe it was here in this story but NONE of it came out through the narrator.

loved the book but.......
the narrator made it hard for me, I sometimes could not which character was talking and became grateful for tells ... such as " wes said" or "Evan ". I am huge fan of the honor series and can't wait to finish it but had a hard time going from one the all time great narrators like Abby C. to this book. I just could not hear any difference when she was reading. it is too bad bc this would have been an easy 5 star.

Bad narration
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that it continued outside of the other Honor books, That being said, Abby Craden should have narrated this since some characters where from the Honor Series. When you get the voices of Blair, Cam and all other characters for so many books, it's kinda hard to listen to a book with same characters with different voices, takes away a lot.
Have you listened to any of Betsy Zajko’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I haven't. I didn't like her narration. Didn't know which character was talking, nothing distinguishing in her voice to tell or any character's apart. I was looking forward to the Justice series coming to audible, but now that I know she will be narrating, not sure I'll but them. Abby Craden who did the Honor series........ FABULOUS!!!!!
Who was the most memorable character of Oath of Honor and why?
