Best of James

My favourite of the James catalogue.
Sinister and dark.
The TV versions never do it justice.

Lovely short story, occasionally iffy pronunciation

I do like M.R. James' fiction, and I find it suitably creepy at any time of day. Number 13 is something I've seen (BBC production) but not read until today and it came across well. My only complaint is with the narrator's pronunciation of some of the Danish words - stue-pige i.e. room girl i.e. maid is not pronounced stua-peej. Pige is pronounced peeyuh and it threw me when the word was said 3 or 4 times in quick succession as it did snap me out of the story.
Other than that, very minor, quibble I thoroughly enjoyed it.
