About this listen
Restore the wonder of the parables, the joy of the Gospel...and the discomfort of the Sword of Truth stabbed firmly in your gut.
Not the Parables of Jesus contains more than 40* different takes on the original parables to snap us out of our over-familiarity and to open our eyes to the truth of the Gospel.
Half tongue-in-cheek, half right between the eyes
Often fun, sometimes poignant, and occasionally painful, these parables reveal our cultural biases, hidden assumptions, and the lies we believe.
Not the Bible. It’s like the Bible. Only not.
* Bet you think that means there are only 41 parables? Well there are actually 42. So there!
©2017 John Spencer (P)2018 John SpencerYear after year he was praised by his family and friends for the unique flavours they had come to appreciate.
Eventually he decided to sell the wine on the side of the road outside the vineyard so that other people could also appreciate it and that he could make a little more money.
Intrigued, some wine experts bought and sampled the wine but the flavours were not as subtle as those they were used to and they spat the wine out.
Attracted by the new wineskins a group of workers bought some wine for their midday meal but the wine did not suit the meats and fruit that they had chosen so they too spat the wine out.
A group of revellers staggered by on their way from a feast where they had already consumed much wine. They bought most of the remaining wine and, not really tasting anything, drank it on their way to their next feast.
Just then, a traveller arrived and saw the last wineskin. If you give me some wine, I’ll give you some water he said. Shrugging, the wine seller passed the traveller the wineskin.
The traveller took a sip, swallowed, thought for a while, smiled, and said, salted wine… interesting choice!
For those considering this book, the above is my recommendation for you to buy it… provided that you are ready for a little more salt than you are used to.
