Summary
From award-winning Carolyn Mackler, the story of Willa, who has been living with Sensory Processing Disorder, but is thrown for a BIG loop when her dad announces he's dating Willa's best friend's mom.
Willa likes certain things to be certain ways. Her socks have to be soft...and definitely can't have irritating tags on the inside. She loves the crunch of popcorn and nachos...but is grossed out by the crunch of a baby carrot. And slimy foods? Those are the worst.
Willa can manage all these things - but there are some things she can't deal with, like her father's big news. He's been keeping a big secret from her...that he's been dating the mom of Willa's best friend Ruby. Willa does NOT like the idea of them being together. And she does NOT like the idea of combining families. And she does NOT like the idea of her best friend becoming her sister overnight. Will she go along with all of these changes? NOT if she can help it!

Highly recommended
Excellent book for kids as well as high schoolers and family listening -- and the audiobook narration is perfect.
Broad and universal themes around friendship and family. With both fun and wisdom built in. Highly recommended.
And - if you have Sensory Processing Disorder or are the parent of a kid with SPD - this book is a must read. While it doesn’t over-focus on SPD, it so accurately represents life with SPD. Not sure there is any other fiction out there that addresses this so beautifully and accurately. And for people who have SPD but not Autism - just standalone SPD - it's so rare to see this covered anywhere. There is maybe nothing as helpful as seeing some of your own life experiences in another person’s story. (And this one would extend to anyone who feels different in hard to define ways). So much appreciation to the author for bringing this story to life.

Reading With My Child
To continue my wild child to read we have got into audible books a couple of years back. We read the print and generally listen on road trips and when headed to bed. This is my second favorite of all of our audible books. It is such a great story of so many real life challenges for real life children without feeling like something that’s locked too much information into one book. It’s also wonderful for a peeve to hear a child truly mature throughout the course of the book. And most importantly for me, he loved it and he’s already ready for the next book. If you have a fifth grader (and I’m sure any other age), or a child adjusting to new surroundings or a child with challenges that make his or her experiences different but no less special than those seen by the average child this book is especially impactful. But I can think of no one who would not enjoy this read.
