Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

'In my work as a gender equality activist, the question I most get asked is, "how do you respond to...?", followed by one of those phrases that leave us feeling frustrated or tongue-tied. In this book, you'll find an empowering roadmap for changing the conversation on social justice issues.'

In our increasingly polarised society, having productive discussions about social justice issues has never been more challenging, or more crucial. From the persistent ('not all men,' 'I don't see colour') to the insidious ('to play devil's advocate...', 'climate change is coming'), too often, antagonistic or problematic responses threaten to distract and derail our most urgent conversations.

Tackling twenty of the most enduring conversation-stoppers, No Offence, But... equips listeners with the knowledge, tools and context to respond with confidence. Alongside other trailblazing writers, educators and advocates, acclaimed campaigner Gina Martin helps us to unpick these phrases, understand why they are harmful and feel empowered to change the conversation.

Read by Gina Martin, Aja Barber, Cathy Reay, Salma El-Wardany, Azadeh Hosseini, Mariam Kemple-Hardy, Ben Hurst, Charlie Craggs, Koa Beck, Nicole Davis, Katie Greenall and Daze Aghaji.

Political rant and audio is not the clearest

A great start that turns into a political rant by the end.
Gina’s narration is also not the clearest and they should actually consider re-recording

Lots of food for thought

Having not rear taken time to pick apart in my own head; sexism, racism, ableism, and other prejudices…. I learned a lot from these chapters, delivered as they were, by people who know from experience what they are talking about. Ie. Not written about people affected/involved, but by them.

It was a good opportunity for me, as a member of ‘the dominant group’ to look at these issues from the perspectives of those affected by outdated and uneducated thinking or laziness, because the issues haven’t affected me personally. I learned new language that helps articulate a newly developing perspective I have on society and marginalized groups, which will also be helpful in future conversations I’ll end up having. And hopefully will give me the confidence to challenge people in a compassionate but educated way about the bigoted use of language and sex/raceist etc attitudes and the harm it causes.

Extremely good book

This thoughtful and extremely well written book covers issues with insight and care, and the contributing chapters from others bring further life to them.

I couldn't stop listening

I found this book fascinating and so educational. I loved that it looked at sexism in an intersectional way which really opened me up to some different experiences. The book is a mix of personal experiences, statistics and general discussion which I found easy to listen to. Would definitely recommend!

Brain food

The text is jam packed with facts, ideas, questions. It is well written and researched and only misses a helpful PDF as a quick reference for all of the sources presented.
