Summary

This audiobook will finally give a face and a voice to those we so easily forget in our society. It will tell the highly personal, human and sometimes surprisingly uplifting stories of real people struggling in a crumbling system. By telling their stories, we will come to know these people; to know their hopes and fears, their complexities and their contradictions. We will learn a little more about human relationships, in all their messiness. And we’ll learn how, with just a little too much misfortune, any of us could find ourselves homeless, even become one of the hundreds of people dying on Britain’s streets.

As the number of rough sleepers skyrockets across the UK, No Fixed Abode by Maeve McClenaghan will also bring to light many of the ad-hoc projects attempting to address the problem. You will meet some of the courageous people who dedicate their lives to saving the forgotten of our society and see that the smallest act of kindness or affection can save a life.

This is a timely and important book encompassing wider themes of inequality and austerity measures; through the prism of homelessness, it offers a true picture of Britain today - and shows how terrifyingly close to breaking point we really are.

Critic reviews

"A sensitive exposé that illustrates the complexities of modern homelessness. Moving, poetic and as rousing as Orwell." (Cash Carraway, author of Skint Estate)

excellent reporting, very listenable

A really important book with detailed reporting of stories often untold. It's well written and importantly very well narrated.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming

Written with compassion and insight and based on meticulous research, this opened my eyes to the reality too many of us try to ignore when we scurry past the figure sitting in the doorway on the high street. Strongly recommended.

important & compelling

well researched with an important human touch. sometimes hard to listen to as the stories are often quite tragic, but well worth it for the important work it does.

A thought-provoking account

Overall this was interesting and eye-opening. I struggled to stay with the last third of the book though as it was a bit long-winded & I felt could have been edited down quite a lot. The narrator was excellent.

Poverty tourism, truisms and uninspiring.

Awful poverty tourism riddled with inaccuracy. Author somehow manages to avoid speaking to a single frontline worker and appears to believe literally everything she is told. If you want to be told sad stories and about the evil old council then this is the book for you! Most annoyingly the author reportedly has psychic powers (reporting what people are thinking and feeling even when she was in another city from them!) but chooses only to use these powers to write a book full of truisms. Homelessness is terrible experience! Who knew!
