Summary

In 1968 the world experienced a brand-new kind of terror with the debut of George A. Romero's landmark film Night of the Living Dead. This was something new...and terrifying. Since then, zombies have invaded every aspect of popular culture.

But it all started on that dreadful night in a remote farmhouse.

Nights of the Living Dead returns to that night, to the outbreak, to where it all began. New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Maberry teams up with the godfather of the living dead himself, George A. Romero, to present a collection of all-new tales set during the 48 hours of that legendary outbreak.

Nights of the Living Dead includes stories by some of today's most important writers: Brian Keene, Carrie Ryan, Chuck Wendig, Craig Engler, David J. Schow, David Wellington, Isaac Marion, Jay Bonansinga, Joe R. Lansdale, Joe McKinney, John Russo, John Skipp, Keith RA DeCandido, Max Brallier, Mike Carey, Mira Grant, Neal and Brendan Shusterman, and Sandra and Ryan Brown, plus original stories by Romero and Maberry.

Narrators include: Ray Porter, Stefan Rudnicki, Jonathan Maberry, Kasey Lansdale, Kristoffer Tabori, Rex Linn, Gabrielle de Cuir, Adenrele Ojo, Richard Gilliland, and Nicholas Guy Smith.

Oh dear...

From the 1st story, seemingly written by a 13 year old who'd won a competition, the bar is set so low that the rest of the anthology can only improve but yet it still struggles to drag it's rancid corpse upright. With barely a quarter of the stories passable from a selection of 20, I can only assume this was rushed out to coincide with the 50th Anniversary or that the contributing authors simply didn't care enough to do anything other than 'phone it in'. Full of "she said, I said, so he said" dialogue and ball-achingly repetitive and dull description, much like it's subject matter this book shambles and groans it's way through nearly 12 hours of sub-par narration and desperately needs to be put out of it's misery with a well placed head shot. A fitting tribute to the late, great George A Romero this most definitely is NOT. Absolutely awful.

brilliant tribute to Night.

Perfect bridge between Night and Dawn and excellent homage to the late Godfather of Ghouls George A Romero.

Second time around

One of my first listens on audible and I’ve just relistened. Like all short story collections you pays your money and take your chances or life is like a box of chocolates…. Never know what your going to get. Few good ones others not so much. Not bad.

Fantastic bit of work really enjoyed it

I really enjoyed this, start to finish. I do love a good zombi read, something nostalgic about the dark solum way they are presented. Reminds me of the 90’s horror scene. Big fan big drama lots of good immersive descriptions.

Really Good

Some shorts are decent, but there are some great ones in here. Ones that I hope the author’s plan on expanding into something of its own.

Some fantastic stuff in this mixed bag

Maybe this is rude to the authors but don't be afraid to skip. Some of these stories are 10/10 and some are 2/10 and that's okay. if you hate the story you are on move to the next because some of these are gold. definitely don't give up before you get to lone gunman because that one slaps. Also the intros are just lovely and would be worth listening to alone.

Worth it for the fairly decent hit rate

It's nearly worth it just for the intros by Jonathan Maberry and George A. Romero, both of which laid a nice foundation for (most of) the zombie tales which followed.

I'd read another review which mentioned a lot of "he said, she said, he said" in the first story so I was braced for it. Had I not been ready, I'd have probably given up on it. Maybe that first story works a lot better when it's read silently as opposed to a narrator constantly telling you a character has just said the thing they said. Honestly, if you made a drinking game out of it and had a swig of beer every time the word said was said then you'd be off your head after about three minutes. Pre-warned as I was, I actually found it quite funny. However, as the opening story it's not the best ambassador for the anthology.

More positively, a lot of the stories seemed to benefit from the narration. Some of the narrators really seemed to get what was on offer and brought feelings and inflections to proceedings which added a whole new level. There were three or four real stand out ones.

If you like zombies, you'll like this book. It's a solid four - some of the stories are great but you need to sit through a few duds too. You'll probably sense the less good ones quite early on so make use of the skip button and you'll be pleased.
