Este texto fue escrito en 1938 por uno de los grandes pensadores del siglo XX. Muestra tanto la radicalidad con la que Nietzsche rechazó el cristianismo como las diversas declaraciones totalmente incompatibles con tal rechazo.
Karl Jaspers interpreta esta contradicción diciendo que Nietzsche jamás llegó a asumir las ideas cristianas. Por lo tanto, tampoco tuvo necesidad de rechazar nada que previamente hubiera aceptado. Sin embargo, la fuerza de estos impulsos cristianos, aun despojados de contenido, sí que constituyó la base del pensamiento de Nietzsche hasta su filosofía tardía. Estos impulsos lo llevaron a postular su revisión de todos los valores. Nietzsche dio el paso a la edad posnihilista con todo el arrojo y la pretensión de absolutez que tenían los primeros cristianos, pero sin compartir sus valores.
