Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In her unmissable debut, actress and screenwriter Ruth Jones shows us the dangers of trying to recapture that which was once lost and failing to realise the beauty of what we already have.

We spend most of our lives wishing we were somewhere else or someone else, or looking forward or harping back. Always thinking the grass is greener on the other side. But it never is. It's still grass. Just a different patch of it, that's all.

The past has a habit of tracking us down. And tripping us up.

When Kate was 22, she had an intense and passionate affair with a married man, Callum, which ended in heartbreak. Kate thought she'd never get over it.

Seventeen years later, life has moved on - Kate, now a successful actress, is living in London, married to Matt and mother to little Tallulah. Meanwhile Callum and his wife, Belinda, are happy together, living in Edinburgh and watching their kids grow up. The past, it would seem, is well and truly behind them all.

But then Kate meets Callum again.

And they are faced with a choice: to walk away from each other...or to risk finding out what might have been.

Second chances are a rare gift in life. But that doesn’t mean they should always be taken....

Sex book

I thought it would be much better, but it does all revolve around sex, the main character Kate is unrelatable, and there were no characters that you really sympathise and come to connect and love. At times I did laugh and it was semi-well written, but I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone unfortunately.

Well written..... drivel

Didnt this genre of fiction go out of fashion in the 80s with Shirley Conran and Sydney Sheldon - who frankly did a far better job than this poor example of a "bonk buster".
I cannot fathom how this book has received four to five stars on Audible. Boring, unfunny, predictable, trite, full of cliches and dislikeable, undeveloped characters with fleeting analysis or exploration into what drove the two protagonists to do what they did. The story did not offer up the subtle nuances of affection and affairs. It rang hollow and untrue.
Sharon Small did a grand job of getting me through it. Disappointing.

Only one problem

I totally loved this book because of these ease of the way the characters bundled along.
The performance would have got a 5 star but when the new chapter number comes up, it is blurted out and doesn’t leave a second to take in the moment of appreciation and thoughts for the end of a chapter.
Most enjoyed book and audible for a long time- the peaks and troughs of life.
Thank you Ruth Jones.

10/10

Absolutely loved this book. Heard about this book on Lorraine, and downloaded it immediately. Finished the whole thing in one day as I couldn't bring myself to press pause. Such an audio 'page turner'!

Easy listen

Very predictable storyline but if you want something easy to read which you can pick up and put down, this is your book.

Disappointing

Expected so much more from the very talented writer of Gavin and Stacey and Stella. It was impossible to muster any sympathy, empathy or even mild affection for the two self centred home wreckers who risked everything for their own indulgence. The whole thing a bit ‘Notting Hill’ with a Scottish accent.

Outstanding

I have really loved all Ruth Jones’ TV programmes so was interested to listen to her first actual novel. I saw her being interviewed about this book recently and she said she had originally written it as a screenplay so had adapted it to a novel. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. I felt I got to know and understand all of the characters and follow their stories and (no spoilers) thought the ending was brilliant and not predictable and definitely left me wanting to know more about them all. Excellent first novel and can’t wait for her second one.

Great story

I really enjoyed the story, I couldn’t stop listening.
I didn’t enjoy the accents of the narrator and the chapter change was intrusive and abrupt.

Excellent and funny

Entirely enjoyed the book. It is funny, down to Earth and heartwarming story. I caught myself laughing and crying at the same time when listening. Could not put it down until I finished it.

Struggled to enjoy because of awful characters

The narrator did a very good job, but I found the characters either awful or so frustrating & the dialogue & sex scenes were so cringe enducing at times. I found myself wanting it all to end horribly because I couldn't find one redeeming quality in any of them. Sadly disappointed & left with a queasy feeling on finishing it.
