"Nanà" ha per protagonista una prostituta e per tema uno dei nuclei attorno a cui ruota l'intero progetto zoliano: la carne, ovvero la pulsione e la ricerca ossessiva del piacere. L'affresco orchestrato da Zola si basa, come sempre nello scrittore francese, su un lungo lavoro preparatorio fatto di interviste a prostitute vere e racconti di amici ben introdotti nell'ambiente galante. Pubblicato nel 1880, il romanzo riesce a descrivere dall'interno la vita del Secondo impero e il suo sistema dei valori.

Nanà esibisce fin da subito una sorta di irrefrenabile propensione al vizio, che la porterà via via a rimorchiare sconosciuti, di ambo i sessi, nei ristoranti e per strada, anche una volta raggiunta la consacrazione nell'empireo delle mantenute di lusso. Ha più volte la possibilità di sposarsi e quindi di sistemarsi, ma sempre prende a calci le opportunità di redenzione sociale che le vengono offerte. Perché lei ama il vortice della vita e sente nascostamente l'impulso di dover trascinare con sé alla rovina quante più persone riesca della società decadente nella quale vive. 

Fra i grandi romanzi di Zola, "Nanà" è forse il più insinuante e indiscreto, sicuramente uno dei più noti e amati. Finalmente in nuova traduzione.
