Summary

Nominated for the Booker Prize 2019.

Shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favourite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her 'missing' boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realise they're perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it. Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite has written a deliciously deadly debut that's as fun as it is frightening.

Disappointing ending! Still a good read.

Kept engaged throughout the book. Narrator does a great job and keeps listener engaged throughout.
Disappointed ending. Would have loved for the serial killer to be made accountable for her actions. But I guess that’s my personal preference of always wanting some form of happy ending.

Taut writing, brilliantly narrated

Loved this novel and devoured in a couple of sittings. The plot is slight, but i thought the writing was truly brilliant - so taut. Not a word is wasted, and no detail shared with the reader is superfluous. The sibling relationship is utterly believable and beautifully drawn, and the characters compelling, all brought to life with through charismatic narration. Highly recommended

A good listen, but not brilliant.

It's not a struggle to finish, just a bit dull and unbelievable/predictable despite it being fast paced. The performance is the thing that keeps it going rather than the story itself and the cultural references are more interesting than the plot line imho.

Well written but odd.

A well written book which I found interesting but in places irritating. The storyline is slightly odd and ,to be honest, very unbelievable, though I suppose you can say that of many books. I found the jumping around from scenario to scenario annoying.
The ending was just totally weird. It was as though the author didn't know how to finish. This had the potential to be an excellent book but somehow fell short of the mark.
On the whole I enjoyed it but I wouldn't rush to listen to this author again.

First-class story - exceptional narration

This is a fun novel with a cracking story. The real key to this novel is the fantastic lovable characters. There is a cast of comic characters who are swimming around in a very dark tale. So the route to a successful audiobook is a narrator who brings them to life. Weruche Opia narrates this tale with sparkle and energy and brings out the humour and the emotion with a relaxed ease. She seemed to be having as much fun reading it as I had listening to it. Also, the entire story is set in Nigeria. Since I am not as familiar with Nigerian voices as others might be, the narration also really helped with the sound of the voices. This gives the audiobook an advantage over the written text, in my view. Overall a great production.

Falls flat

It didn't hit the mark.
The twists and secrets are very obvious from the beginning. It is a good story but it falls flat a little.
I loved the accent of the narrator on the other hand.

Really good read.

I really enjoyed the book and the narration of the story. I would definitely recommend. It was surprising that the sister was able to get away with murder so to speak. I would of loved for the writer to explore the area of why the "pretty sister " was the way she was.

Fabulous book.

It is very nice to listen to a book just like this. The word and mannerisms were just like I expected it to be. Excellent work. Can’t wait for the next one. Thank you.
