Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Perfect period detail and rapturously romantic, from one of the best-known and beloved historical novelists of all time.

John, Duke of Bedford, grew to manhood fighting for his father, King Henry IV of England, on the wild and lawless Northern Marches. A prince of the royal blood, loyal, strong, the greatest ally that his brother - the future Henry V - was to have. Filled with the clash of bitter rivalries and deadly power struggles, this is Georgette Heyer's last and most ambitious novel.

Historically accurate retelling

I love history and I love Georgette Heyer but I am afraid this story has rather too many longeuses for my enjoyment. The story is often less than gripping and while it may be pretty true, a lot was like watching paint dry. The reader does a magnificent job with it.

Outstanding!

I am in awe of the narration.of this sadly unfinished work by the late, great Georgette Heyer. While her beautifully polished gems of regency romances and wonderful "golden age" detective stories have given me pleasure for all my reading life, it is good to get a deeper sense of the very great depth of her knowledge and scholarship. lf only there had been time for this and other projects to be concluded! As it stands, "My LordJohn" even in what we are told was a preliminary draft of what was intended to be a much longer and greater work, is in my opinion unforgettable. The narration of this very involved, unbelievably fact and action-filled saga was in itself masterly. This narrator kept a constantly varied, interesting and interested pace going right through the enormous amount of material involved. I didn't hear one mistake (as I'm interested in reading aloud and storytelling, I can sometimes pick up on distracting slip-ups). lmagine having all that drummed into in school back in the day.... then again, if we had used Georgette Heyer and learnt from her research methods......)
Major respect and personal thanks to this narrator - really did this work justice. If only there had been more of it!

History Brought to Life

An excellent telling of a very interesting period in English history. The narrator's performance is masterful.
