Summary
Der taubstumme Garassim ist ein zuverlässiger Arbeiter und verliebt sich in die Wäscherin Tatjana, aber die Herrin der beiden hat andere Pläne und verheiratet Tatjane mit dem Trunkenbold Kapiton, der so viel Unsinn anstellt bis die Herrin beide in ein entlegenes Dorf verbannt. Garassim begleitet beide bis zur Stadtgrenze und auf dem Rückweg rettet er einen Hund vor dem Ertrinken.
Er peppelt das Tier auf und Mumu wird zum Liebling des Landguts. Schließlich findet sogar die Herrin an Mumu Gefallen und befiehlt, das Tier in ihrem Wohnhaus unterzubringen, allerdings weigert sich der Hund einen anderen als Gerassim als Herrn zu akzeptieren.
Die genervte Gutsherrin lässt das Tier auf dem Trödelmarkt verscherbeln, aber eines Tages taucht Mumu halbverhungert wieder auf. Gerassim bekommt den Befehl Mumu zu töten.
