About this listen

Mrs Zant has recently lost her beloved husband, and while walking in the Kensington Gardens, the spot where she and her deceased husband declared their love for each other, she feels his presence trying to warn her of some coming danger.

Mr Rayburn witnesses it all, and he'll have to fight his own incredulity regarding the supernatural and his gut feeling that the disturbed young woman is telling the truth.

Brought to life by Golden Globe Award-winning actress Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Mrs Zant is the perfect Victorian ghost story.

Short enough to retain an interest, but...

I dozed off a couple of times, trying to reach the conclusion - and had to try find the approximate passage of story again.

Although I like Gillian Anderson's calmness of voice, here this was a tad too monosyllabic for me. Not all of the pauses were 'in the right place', so at times I found myself wanting to grab the script and take over the reading of that passage.

Enjoyable enough, but the tale was too gaping or the character explanation too scant in parts, to totally satisfy me.

Old time values.

Thoroughly enjoyable ghost story, with a strong bearing on traditional values, now mostly forgotten in this century!

Rather predictable story

Typical Victorian drama, this short story is highly enjoyable, but it's no surprise ending! Gillian Anderson is well cast.

Old fashioned gothism but not a timeless classic

As much as I loved Gillian Anderson's narration the plot was rather stagnant and did not have the same gothic expression such as classics like Rebecca. The other character descriptions were quite weak. Could not quite get into it.

Beautifully Read

Such a gentle ghost story, brought to life by Gillian Anderson’s excellent narration - although quite a short story, it’s well worth a listen.

Beautifully narrated.

I listened to the Audible edition narrated by Gillian Anderson.

I like Wilkie Collins. The narration was brilliant. A great Collins story, not his best, but still... I think if I'd read the actual book I would have given up through boredom, but Gillian kept the suspense and atmosphere going.

Intriguing Little Story

A fascinating and compelling short story. Atmospheric and readable (listenable). Gillian Anderson's narration is easy to listen to - she has that sort of voice - and the acts the characters very well. However, her narrator's voice is a little robotic at times. All the same I enjoyed it very much.

Offbeat Short Story

A strange, creepy short story, Mrs Zant and the Ghost lodges itself in your imagination.. Brilliant reading from Gillian Anderson - icy, detached and beautifully underplayed.

Strangely abrupt ending

Some people described Gillian Anderson's narration as monotonous, which it was but I quite enjoyed it! Perfect for a bedtime story with its hypnotic style. The tale itself is also meanderingly mesmeric which made the suddenness of the ending a jolt. I had to check there weren't any missing chapters and I'm still not sure if the real ending was missing! Given that the end is supposed to be questionable, I still enjoyed it, but I'm glad it was included for free!
