Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audio edition of Morgan's Passing by Anne Tyler.

Morgan Gower has an outsize hairy beard, an array of peculiar costumes and fantastic headwear, and a serious smoking habit. He likes to pretend to be other people - a jockey, a shipping magnate, a foreign art dealer - and he likes to do this more and more since his massive brood of daughters are all growing up, getting married and finding him embarrassing. Then comes his first dramatic encounter with Emily and Leon Meredith, and the start of an extraordinary obsession.

Not my favourite Anne Tyler

I did not really enjoy this book. I found the character of Morgan completely unlikeable. It was, at best, an interesting exercise in reading a book when you can't find anything to like about the main character. I also found the main female character very two dimensional and implausibly drippy for want of a better description.
I love Anne Tyler's work as rule, she's a true mistress of her craft. If I were you, I'd read the other books she's written first.

Creepy

There are so many things unique about this book in the Anne Tyler universe. First, a love affair between a 50-something father of seven daughters and a twenty-something mother of one daughter. Secondly, though I think Tyler meant Morgan to be comical, I found his stalking of Emily creepy. I was left at the end with an empty feeling because none of the characters rang true.
