Editor reviews

Gifted narrators Jonathan Keeble and Clare Anderson employ their prodigious talents to render these classic short stories from the 1800s with a sense of dread and gloom. With deliveries that are both smooth and believable, they use pauses and rhythm to create tension between the characters. They also produce fear and shock as they describe scenes of abject horror and suspense. They effectively call upon their acting abilities to create characters who are both convincing and otherworldly. Led by the talented Keeble and Anderson, these stories are shocking and suspenseful.

Summary

These five 19th-century ghost stories from both sides of the Atlantic provide some of the best chills in the genre. Ambrose Bierce is well-known, but "To Let" by B. M. Croker and "The Upper Berth" also provide moments to tingle the spine, as does "An Account of Some Strange Disturbances" by Le Fanu. This collection, which is further enhanced by suitably chilling music, was originally released under the title Classic Chilling Tales 3.

An interesting variety of US and UK Ghost Stories

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

On the whole, yes. Some stories are better than others.

If you’ve listened to books by the authors before, how does this one compare?

Story 1 by J.S. Le Fanu is one of his best.
Story 2 by Ambrose Bierce is not a favourite of mine.
Story 3 by Ambrose Bierce is one of his best.
Story 4 by F Marion Crawford is my favourite of this collection.
Story 5 by B.M Croker was the first of this author's work I have heard, I found it a little difficult to keep my attention on it.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Keeble and Clare Anderson ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Read by Jonathan Keeble, Clare Anderson, Garric Hagon and Kate Harper.

Jonathan Keeble, Clare Anderson and Kate Harper are all new narrators to me, but I would choose them again as they were both clear and atmospheric.

Garric Hagon is an excellent narrator especially for a non-distracting American accent, this recording is no exception.

Was Moonlit Road and Other Chilling Stories worth the listening time?

Yes, especially as it can be listened to in sections and not all at once.

Any additional comments?
