About this listen

A powerful ruler, an alluring young woman, a scandal that would rock the nation: Anne Boleyn’s life story sounds more like a juicy TV docu-drama than a chapter of English history. Although she is not of noble birth or even especially beautiful, Anne Boleyn manages to rise to the very pinnacle of the English aristocracy.

Renowned for her extraordinarily vivid recreations of historical events, Carolly Erickson brings out the full fascinating story of the enigmatic Anne Boleyn. Erickson paints an engaging portrait of this intriguing woman and her tragic life, from her early education in court intrigue, through her courtship and controversial marriage to Henry VIII, to the day she mounts the scaffold.

With her expertise in the Tudor period, her sensitivity to sexual and political nuance, and her eminently readable prose style, Carolly Erickson is the ideal biographer for the elusive Anne Boleyn. Narrator Simon Prebble’s elegant performance evokes all of the bittersweet drama of Boleyn’s exceptional life and the tumultuous times in which she lived.

A wonderful reading of a tragic historical story , the barbarity in those days was in fathomable

Poignant sad story

Written in the 80s so some of the facts in this are not actually factual. The narrator is good on the whole but he needs to brush up on his pronunciation. Its not Shapooee but Shapwee (Chapuys) , a bit grating. But the details and writing style is enjoyable and so is worth a listen/read .

Good for its age

I absolutely loved this! Well read by a male narrator, it tells the whole story of Anne’s political ascent and descent from royal approval.

Highly recommended.

Having devoured huge amounts of Tudor content, both factual and fictional, I can say this is the best content I have discovered so far. It feels much more evocative of the actual time and place and people, giving the reader a much better idea of how events were seen at the time period in question. I have come away with a much better picture of Anne, and an understanding of Henry - and also of the "common folk" - than I have had elsewhere. This is how history should be told. The author is clearly using contemporary letters, journals, articles, etc, from the Tudor period itself, and we see events through the eyes of the main players who witnessed all the dramas and intrigue as it unfolded. It's not retold from a modern, P.C, point of view. I will definitely be buying more of this authors books. The narrator was perfect too.

Best Ever Retelling of the Anne Boleyn Story

I thoroughly enjoyed the historically accurate and well narrated account of the much maligned, murdered, Queen Anne Boleyn. Her fateful and tragic involvement with King Henry VIII changed the course of English History. Her failure to produce Henry’s longed for son caused her downfall and murder. Her triumph is that she produced one of England’s greatest monarchs. This is a very accurate account of her life and times. An excellent book.

An Excellent Account Of A Tragic Maligned Queen.

Very enjoyable listen. I've listened to many books about Henry and Anne, it helps to see the different facets and this book did not disappoint.

Captivating

The story did not sugar coat her flaws nor diminished her spirit or life journey. A bit hasten and superficial during the end imo. otherwise a very good work

The complexity of Anne's character

A very well researched book. Readable but with a depth of knowledge of the period and the society of the court of Henry V11.
Showing her scholarship.

Excellent style of writing.
